I wouldn't label it a bonehead purchase really. You paid way too much, but you got a really really nice car in return. It is the folks that pay too much for a piece of junk that should have more regrets. At least you can walk up from behind that car and know that you own a Mercedes!! Good to hear you got your evap replaced. That makes that car trouble free, in theory, for quite a while. Nice!!!

In this market the car is a bit overpriced- what else should we expect from a dealer? I like the looks of the 210- looks like a taylor-made suit- classy. I'd love a 98/99 diesel 210 for my wife to drive- gotta wait until the kids get a bit older.

I'd like to thank all of you guys for your input. After digesting the enormous amount of info that was supplied, I think I will take a look at it this weekend. Bottom line for me is, the cosmetic issues are not very important to me. That car looks about 100 times nicer than my current car even with it's "beauty marks". What is important is that the car has only 129k and the interior is like new. I will be asking for service records, bottom line no records no sale. If good records are provided, and it makes it thru a PPI with no red flags I will offer $6000.00. Sound like a plan?

At the asking price, or anywhere near it, I would be concerned about the body damage. The OP has indicated he does not mind the body damage but the question is what other damage or problems are not being disclosed by the seller? A PPI is strongly recommended.
The fact that the car is being sold by this dealer means that it was traded in and then wholesaled off because it was known to have problems that the taker of the trade didn't want to bother with. This turns on all sorts of red lights for me.

I agree 100%. That's why I want to see records and have a PPI.

Well done. If the results are not good, you can walk away or offer a low price with the information as leverage. The seller will either take it (he may really want to move that car off of his lot) or reject it (he's looking for someone dumber than you) but at least you won't end up with a car full of expensive problems.

To the OP: good luck, but that car doesn't seem like a $6,000 car in this market.

I never buy cars from dealers. You really never know the car that way. Buying a car private party really is the way to go with Euro cars. At least you get to meet the person that has been driving it and get an good idea of the issues/conditions of the car. $6000 seems reasonable if it was cared for, but given that it is a dealer car, who knows?
