My car puked it's guts out!
....well by puke I mean it barfed up half of the 6L of new nice expensive oil I gave it. It's a 81 240D and I just did an oil change. Something seemed a little funny when I was tightening the nut back on to hold the top on the filter housing. One stud was showing more thread than the other. I thought it was odd that I hadn't noticed it before. I gave her a start anyway, after about 20 seconds my oil pressure gauge would not quite make it to 3 bar as it usually does, I shut it off only to find the nut and stud totally loose and oil all over the driveway.
The stud has come totally out of the housing. Does anyone know of how to fix this problem? |

Do a search on it. Number of threads on such a failure with different solutions.

Drill out thread taking precautions as to where shavings go, clean up the hole and the underside...
Take a 3" M8 bolt, and grind half the head off at one side--sufficient to allow the bolt to fit upwards into the drilled out hole... Apply a good 'JB-Weld' type epoxy to bolt where its in contact with housing, and fit. The 'Poxy will keep bolt in place when removing nut for filter-changes, but the main 'holding force is on the half-moon bolt-head... Re-fit lid with new gasget and Do Not Overtighten in future!

Awesome advice. I think I'll try the helicoil approach if I can get my hands on a new stud.
Does anyone know where to get a new stud? Thanks! Will |
