Hints needed for Coolant Leak
Hi guys and gals!
I did a dumb thing driving down to LA, i didn't turn my engine off at rest stops. Why? well, because I had been told that shutting off a hot engine and then starting it is harmful. It overheated and all the coolant leaked (fell ) out. so, 1. The intense pressure caused a leak in the coolant system right? 2. Where the first place to look? any tips? My mechanic already scolded me so please go easy. Thank you in advance!!!!! forever grateful, Philip

1. Not necessarily. If the system was functioning, it should have kept the pressure in. The fill cap is designed to open after a set amount of pressure is reached, so if some thing gave way before that, then obviously that thing wasn't in very good shape.
2. First thing is to fill it up again and then look. Oh, and what car this is would be nice. 300TD?

These cars should be able to be left to idle for hours at any time of day or night.
What do you have? 220D 240D? 300D? 300TD? 300SD? 300SDL? 350SD? 190D? How many miles, and at what temp does it normally run?

Tstat, water pump, overflow tank, blockage, hoses etc etc.

um, I'm guessing you left the A/C on while stopped? othewise, there should be a cooling effect, not an overheating one... I'd verify the aux fan is working.
then test for a cracked head/blown head gasket. it could have just been old worn hoses failing, nothing to do with the idling. replace bad, refill with G-05 and pressure test. ignore the mechanic's dire anger and find out what failed.

Coolant leak in my 300TD
Hi All,
Thank you for the car model reminders. I have a 1983 300TD with 139,000. it usually runs at 80 do 90 degrees Celcius. I was not running the A/C, it's broke. I usually don't run it long and hard as well. I didn't check my coolant immediately before setting off, but had recently checked it and it was at level. Time to check the hoses and coolant system. Argh! I topped off the coolant a few times before arriving back home. while driving it would leak when I came to a stop, I could smell it. now have arrived back home the coolant res is totally empty. thanks, Philip
