1995 E300 intermittent blower fan operation.....

And it only made 102 today!!!

OK, I've never had any issues with this car. Today was completely out of the blue. Youngest daughter and I cruised to Fry's to look for part of the wife's birthday present {Elvis movie box set}.
The air conditioning worked fine on the way there. Started off in auto and moved to low fan speed on the way there. We went to leave, turned on the AC and no fan!!! The compressor was on, and when I was moving, cold air would ooze from the vents. No matter what combo of buttons I pressed I got no blower fan. Even stopped, turned the car off/on, still inop. Great! I figured I blew a fuse to it.
Fast forward to this evening. Went out and started the car. Turned on AC, fan on auto, and it came on and blew cold air. I turned it to low fan speed and that was it. No more fan, no matter what.
I looked for the fuse. Fuse box cover said blower fan fuse was "outside" of fuse box. I found a strip fuse right in front of fuse box that looked like a glow plug strip fuse. It did not appear cracked although I will remove it now that I believe that is a fuse for the fan. [yea search function]
Is there anything else I should look at? Would seem an odd failure for the CCU, but who knows with those things.
Any ideas anyone????

BTW, if I had taken this car to the GTG today it sure would have ended up being a hot trip!!

They moved the fuse out of the box in the later 124s (not sure what year) because they would melt a hole in the fuse box. I had to move mine out after it melted. If the strip fuse doesn't fix it, it might be the brushes in the fan.

You car seems a little new for that, but I guess it depends how much the fan was used. If you get it working leave it on auto and adjust the temp wheel. From what I've read it is better to leave it on auto and let it decide how much fan to use. I'm not sure why that's the case.

I believe there is a DIY on pulling the fan. You have to remove the wiper motor and all the trim pieces above it to get to the fan. As you have a '95, you should have a cabin filter under there as well.

Down here, leaving it on auto still keeps the fan on a high setting pretty much forever. Once the car cools down I actually get cold with the fan on low. Love the later W124's.....
So, is that strip fuse the only fuse for the blower?
I can't imagine the blower motor brushes being used up, but you never know. I wouldn't think that would cause it to stop when going from auto to low as the fan was already turning. Hmmmmm........

Even if you adjust the temp wheel to 75 or 80? Your problem is odd. When my brushes were dying, some days the fan would work and other days, nothing. I hope it's not you CCU! It is strange that it only does it when you switch the fan to low....

Well, one time it never came on at all, on any setting. Sheesh that was a super hot drive home.

Well, what do we always tell folks about glow plug strip fuses? Pull it out and make sure it isn't cracked!!
Well, the blower fan strip fuse would be the same way.

Looked perfectly fine just sitting there. And I looked closely!!

But upon further examination:

It is a 30 amp strip fuse that I'll get from the dealer I guess. Right now it has an 80amp glow plug strip fuse in it.
At least it isn't my daily driver. Matter of fact I'll probably just order the fuse since I doubt I'll drive the thing for at least a week.....
Thanks as usual for the fine assistance.

Excellent outcome. Why don't you order 2 so you have a spare? I have a spare 80 amp in the glove box just in case.

Jimmy,

Was it a 30 amp that blew or an 80 amp? If it's an 80 amp in 30 amp spot, check the amp draw. I did have to replace the blower motor in my w123 becaue it was pulling 26 amps. That is when I found the to high rated fuse, cause it blew and melted the fuse box plastic as well. Do not want a fire in there!!

Thanks guys, This post just diagnosed my problem on my new to me 95 E300. Bought it with the blower not functioning, among a few other problems. Actually pulled the blower motor assembly and had it tested. was told it was fine. then got the system schematic which identified to me that there was a fuse, but couldn't find it.

Love this forum!!!!
