240D won't shift into any gear
All of a sudden my girlfriend's 81 240d 4 speed wouldn't shift into any gear. She says it drove fine last night. Brake fluid reservoir is about halfway between min and max, and until just now it's shifted into the 4 forward gears quickly and effortlessly. Reverse had been tricky to get into since we bought the car, but holding the clutch in for 1-2 seconds before shifting would keep it from grinding.
Any ideas on where I should start looking for trouble? - Jonathan

Probably a clutch hydraulic problem. MB designed the systems so that low hydraulic fluid in the reservoir causes the clutch to become inoperable before the brakes fail. Your clutch master could have taken a gulp of air.

Sounds like the clutch isn't releasing. Fill brake reservoir to the top and pump the clutch pedal about fifty times. They have a limited self-bleeding capability. If what I described doesnt' work, search "clutch bleed". Also check to see if you have fluid leaking at either the slave or the master cylinder.

you'd think so Mine didn't quit work that way... Brakes basically failed.. luckly got it home (clutch still operational)...But essentially yes, do as the other gentlemen described as that is a classic symptom. While your wrenching, you might as well replace the slave cyl. as well....it's only a matter of time before that one takes a dump as well. The system is pretty easy to work on and, their is so much info on the forum about how to do this task that it maybe should take you a couple hours.

I'm sure you have this covered but I gota ask, are you sure the back section of the brake fluid reservoir has fluid in it?
Sometimes its hard too see and sometimes folks dont realize there are two chambers to check.
