What are European water bumpers?

Saw a 1968 220d for sale that has "European water bumpers". What the hell are they? Anyone ever heard of them?--Scott

Thats the one I saw-doesn't seem like they could give much impact absorption though. and they would be pretty heavy if they were water filled.

Hydro = water. Hydro is the root of Hydraulic. Water Bumpers = Bumpers with hydraulic shock absorbers???

Maybe these cars with "water bumpers" were for export to places like north Africa or the Gobi desert
