My Mechanic Says a Turbo can't be adjusted!

Okay, been curious about this... Can a Garrett turbo on a 1985 617 block be adjusted? I've been told by fellow enthusiasts that it can. Easily no less. However, when asking two professional MB Certified mechanics, they both said no! I did a search on the subject, turns out it can? Stu Ritter posted a how to... Is turbo adjustment actually done? Is it recommended as safe? Or is it not supposed to be done, hence professionals don't even do it? Please advise.

Your mechanic is correct.

The turbo itself cannot be adjusted, BUT the wastegate which regulates boost pressure, is what is adjusted. Adjusting this increases or decreases boost pressure. It's not harmful as long as you keep boost within factory spec. (13.5 psi being the upper limit of factory spec.)

Okay, the wastegate can be adjusted... But is this something MB mechanics do as maintenence? Is MBUSA or independent authorized to make wast gate adjustments??? Have a lot of you tampered with the waste gate/had it adjusted? Is this something that needs adjusting with age? Thanks!

It really depends. Hook a pressure gauge up to the line coming off the rear of the intake manifold. If you have low boost pressure (5-8 psi) then your wastegate spring has lost some tension, and you can tighten it up. It's a whole lot easier to hook up a manual boost controller though. Do a search and you'll find some posts regarding this.

The procedure is not dangerous as long as you stay within factory spec and have an accurate pressure gauge hooked up, so you know how much boost pressure you're running.
