I did a single 3/16th hole, mainly to allow a small amount of coolant flow past it so the cold plug of coolant on the other side wouldn't keep it from opening. I located it near the top of the thermostat to help bleed air past it. There's a mark on the 'stat that indicates which side is up. Seems silly, but I figure they probably marked it because it matered. Also, make sure it wasn't installed backwards -- that can be done on some cars and then they don't open very well.

When I got my car, it ran hot. There were several causes: too thick of coolant (too mych coolant, not enough water), air bubble in system, old thermostat (althrough I tested the old one and it seemed to open when it should).
