rubber bumper strip coming loose
The rubber strip around the back bumper on my 1982 300D is loose on one side. I can see white clips which seem to hook in going towards the center of the car. I can push it back in place, but it does not stay. Has any one dealt with this problem?
Thanks. |

When that happened to my CD I found that in the center of the bumper there was tie wire keeping tension on the strip. It had rusted away, so I replaced it- it lasted about 10 yrs, and I need to do it again.
Stainless wire might have lasted longer I found it easier if the rubber bumper ends were off first; I used dish soap to lube everything.

I had this same problem with the front bumber. three of the little "L" shaped pieces that fit on the plastic strip the rubber fit on to, broke off just the tip of the "L".
so I used a saws all blade in my hand and sawed off the "L" piece flush with the plastic strip. I laid on my back with my Maketa cordless angle drill. and drilled one small hole in the strip. then used a small washer to fit over a sheet metal screw head, and a larger washer over that to cover the slot in the bumper. then tightened down the screw. used one screw at each place one was broken off. looks good from the front. I've found ones at the JY that were in good shape. And you can still buy new ones, I think. If it's hanging off, it's best to pull it completely and re-secure the attachment strips. drill a hole top to bottom on the inside ends and wire the two halves together. This will keep the attachment strips from coming loose again. A rubber mallet will help get the rubber back on in no time.
