You pays your money, you takes your chances.

Is (was) that first one a fuel filter? If so I think it's time for some biocide.

You picked it up! How does it run, drive and shift?

Is that first one the oil cap or a filter?

thats the fuel filter...sad eh? it runs surprisingly well considering its current state of neglect. Very little blow by, tranny shifts smooth, there was some bad smoke at start up but that was pretty much taken care of after a purge yesterday. glow plugs are shot and the ac/ fan isn't working. very annoying constant vibration at idle due to a motor mount that is completely shot. all in all, i'm very pleased.

That is Awesome!! Can't beat that. And with the little bit you have in it, you can always get it back.

I would clean up that engine and bay before you do too much under there. You don't want to get any dirt or crud into a vital component by accident.

Good job!!

Parkland - you've got a good car for what you paid. -Remember, it was running when you bought it - a good sign in light of it's neglect. I would be happy to own it if I were in your shoes, and I wanted a project car to somewhat restore. I would invest in getting the engine bay steam-cleaned. The interior picture you took - well, it pretty well sold me on you buying the car, even at $800. Now that I see the neglect of the fuel filters - I believe for certain you got a good car for the buck. Re-new that puppy, and it will make you proud. I hope you will continue to post the updates of this MB diesel as you re-new it - I think you at least got a good 2nd or 3rd driver car out of the deal for your initial purchase price!

After a weekend sit i went to start it this morning, which takes a while because i have no glow plugs working, there is a large amount of white smoke after finally starting. My question is, wouldnt this be normal if i have no glow plugs and it takes about 4 or 5 tries of just turning it over before starting? Isn't white smoke unburnt fuel? The smoke clears after about 7 seconds of idle.

White smoke is just cold engine behavior, on my 240D it blows white smoke for a good 10 minutes in the winter while it warms up at idle, but never if im driving it to warm it up. Bad glow plugs would make that very justifiable.

Black smoke is unburnt fuel, Blue smoke is burning motor oil, and white smoke is more than often low combustion temperatures. (Someone back me up or correct me on that, im working on memory.)

With neglect being mentioned I'd ream the glow plug holes before you put the new ones in, it will save a knuckle or two down the road. Not to mention the cost of removing a snapped off glowplug. (Don't ask how I know)
