Smash and grab
Yesterday my wife's 300SD was broken into. They smashed the passenger side window and took what they
thought was her handbag. The good news however, was that it was a purse that she had just totally cleaned out and was delivering to her daughter as a gift, lol. That's the good news. I laughed thinking about the dirtbags getting back to their vehicle with a purse from, "duh wow man a MERCEDES", opening it up to moths flying out :>P. So now we have the hassle of fixing it. The funny thing is, that her real purse with cash and valuables was "locked" in the trunk. My wife stated that "All the dummies had to do was pull up the driver's side door lock and take all the stuff in the trunk if they had been thinking". Well, I ignorantly told her, that design concious Mercedes cetainly would not have made it that easy, so I bet her (bad move, heh) and sure enough, all you have to do is reach through the broken window, lift the lock button on the driver's side and open pops the trunk lock. Doesn't that seem like a really bad design oversight?

Meanwhile, I practice 'defensive-accessorizing', by refusing to install fancy audio gear (at least any that could be visible to nearby hoodlums) in any of my vehicles. (Of couse I'm one of those rare persons that's still perfectly happy with cassettes) In the past I've hidden amps under seats or behind dashes, cabled portable CD players to the radio, concealed speaker upgrades under the factory grilles, or painted-over the brand-badges when the new speaker-kits wouldn't fit under the factory grilles. i recommend that you remove the passenger seat and beat on it while it's upside down + vacuum, in order to get all of the mini slivers of glass out of the seams. vacuuming isn't always enough and the glass can grind/shred the seams over some time.

Will that totally sucks, these little scum bags thinking they can get something for nothing. great you got the last laugh on this one, but now you have to clean up the mess and pull a window at PNP.
With the 123`s, to lock the trunk turn the key so the slot is sideways, then if the doors are unlocked, the trunk is still locked. the 126 should be the same. Charlie

Sorry for you loss.
I told My Wife when She came to the USA never to leave anything in view that looks like it has any value at all; not even change in the center Counsel. Next was never to leave the Car parked on the Street at Night; our Neighbors who park on the Street have had Windows busted out and once in a while the whole Car is taken. Most Cars don't have system that opens the Trunk from the Door. Some have a Switch in the Glove compartment that will open the Trunk.

You can "double lock" the trunk by manually locking it with the key. Even if you open the driver door or unlock it, the trunk remains locked.

Come on people use proper German terminology....it's the boot
Agreed to get all the glass pieces out...its a pain...had all the drivers windows and windshield broken out of my current car....still have slivers of glass finding themselves into my hand... Also agreed don't ever leave change in the center console, i refused to give a homeless guy change one time....he said you have all kinds in the console, got into a screaming match over it...he assumed it was his, but it was in my car and I was so and so for not giving it to him..

X3 on the change. Had a guy slash open a convertible roof on a miata for 3 quarters in the center console.
Another incident some sob smashed both front windows, stabbed a crowbar into the center console, and worked it back and forth to extract a cheap walmart radio. Maximum amount of damage to my old volvo, an the guy forgot to take the plug for the radio. Used a set of clamps to work the console back in, but it was never the same

Unfortunately, some of our local revenue enhancement officers (traffic cops) like to ticket for tint!

I've been looking into clearplex window film. I figure if it can protect a windshield from projectiles, it can prevent a side window from shattering during a smash and grab attempt.

I never leave anything of value in view. I also generally don't lock my vehicles. I've only ever had someone go in one of my vehicles once, and it was a neighbor kid who wasn't right mentally. He took the owner's manual from my 240D, but left me a pair of eyeglasses and half a pack of chewing gum. It was about a year before I found out who did it.
