Power Steering Leak

The steering box on my 1982 300D is leaking badly (1qt/day) from the seal located on the bottom of the box, where the arm comes out and then connects to the tie rod, etc.

Can this be repaired?

As a quick fix, would disabling the power steering pump help or hurt me?

The Seal can be replaced. There is some write ups on it somewhere.

I would pick some of that Power Steering Sealer over choice of completely disconnecting the Power Steering. I believe it would slow down the leak until you can replace the seal.

I have never read about anyone disconnecting (by removing the Belt) the Power Steering and driving that way. I do not think it would damage anything.
I will certainly increase the effort to steer as besides steering the Car without power you will be pushing the fluild in and out of the Steering Box yourself.

Over the winter I drove power-steering-less for around 4,000 miles. It's not as tough as you'd think. Then I drove 8,000 with power steering, and now I've gotten a leak. The leak was caused recently by either curb slamming or the corrective alignment thereafter.

I'll try some of the mechanic in a bottle tonight

Why don`t you pull one off a wreck. I pulled one sunday off a 82 240D, 1/2 price . remove 2 hoses, two bolts on the steering coupler. tap it up the shaft towards the firewall. 3 bolts hold it to the car behind the wheel. I let it drop, the wiggled it down and removed the tie rod from the pitman arm.
R&R it, then fix the leaky one for practice.

A qt per day might be too much of a leak to stop with seal conditioning power steering fluid, but probably worth a shot. I've limped my leaking box along for more than two years now using powersteering fluid with stopleak/seal conditioners; but mine never leaked that severly.

I don't have the facility to do this repair myself, and I haven't felt like spending the money to get it fixed by a mechanic (expensive). But will probably address it once the front end suspension work is done along with motor mounts in the next couple of years, or sooner if it gets really really bad.

Maybe someone will chime in and say if it is difficult to replace the Seal While the Steering Box is still on the Car.
