OM617 Starter replacment

Starter health is important to your diesel!!!
http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/diesel-discussion/107318-starter-health-important-your-diesel.html#post739798

#1. Disconnect the battery.
#2. Lift front and rear of the car.
#3. Support the car on jack stands.
#4. Disconnect wires from starter (one philips screw and one 17mm nut).
#5. Remove the mount bolt from the passenger side of the (steering damper) steering shock.
#6. Remove the idler arm 24mm nut.
#7. Lower the idler arm/steering linkage.
#8. Remove the two (starter bracket to engine block) 10mm bolts.
#9. Remove the two 10mm Allen bolts (through transmission bell housing into starter), make sure the tool is fully seated into the Allen bolt at ALL times.. The upper bolt is generally accessed with a three foot breaker bar and three foot 1/2 inch drive extension with a swivel, go in with this tool near the transmission mount, up over the transmission and forward to the starter bolt...this is much easier than it sounds...you will see that the tool comes through the transmission hump space about a half inch away from the bolt.
Warning Step #9:: You should clean out the hex hole on the bolt with a piece bent wire...this often gets gunked up and you will wreck the bolt if you cant fully seat the hex tool.
Note Step #9: Here is a link that has helped many members understand how difficult this job can be.

#10. Shift the steering shock and linkage out of your way to give access better for dropping the starter
Warning Step #10: The starter is heavy, awkward, and can easily slip = put a piece of wood on the floor, remove it through the upper engine compartment and let it fall on the ground, (no harm to you or the part).

#A1. Installation suggestion: Have a strong assistant reach through the upper engine compartment to catch/hold/mount the starter, so it can NOT fall out and smash you.
#A2. Attach top bolt first.

Everything else should be the same in reverse.
