What should a 300D do 0-60???

Just curious, hpw long should it take a 300D to go 0-60??? Thoughts, tests, stories??? Just curious.

LarryBible 10-31-2001 09:20 AM

It would be somewhere on the order of 20 seconds or better.

Have a great day,

Let me clarify...

No, what would a 300D Turbo do???? Much higher than 20 secs! Sorry for the confusion.

LarryBible 10-31-2001 11:15 AM

I have a book at home that will have the factory claim. I will try to remember to look tonight. I still think that it will be somewhere around 20 seconds.

For the 300D turbo I think it's around 13 seconds.

The 240D is about 20 seconds - varies with the model year and transmission.

The 123 chassis manual had these specifications at the front of volume 1, for all the different 123 models. Unfortunately, I sold the manual along with the car.

Somewhere on the order of 12 to 14 seconds.

You can time it with a calender:p

according to a 1982 article in Car and Driver, the '82 300CD-turbo did 0-60 in 12.0 seconds. The 300D-turbo should be very similar.
Top speed was reported as 105.

interestingly, the article wasn't all that kind to the car. presented it as somewhat old fashioned from a technology standpoint. did praise the quality of workmanship and overall solidness.

I'm still laughing about the "calendar" comment. Got my 300TD down from 18 to around 13.

Someone, (albeit Larry) has never driven a 300D Turbo... Much higher than 20 sec (LOL)! Thanks to all who repsonded... I figured it was 12-14secs... I guess depending on little things...

Ben300SD 10-31-2001 09:25 PM

My 300D does 0-60 in 12.4 seconds, according to specs. I'm not sure what time my car actually posts, as I've never really run my car that hard up to 60. I wait until I'm driving 80 or so to really punch it.

I should mention that my 300D is probably not the 300D you are talking about. My 300D is a W124 chassis with a 2.5 liter turbodiesel.

Randall,

Yes indeed I HAVE driven a 300D turbo. My wife had a very good running '83 300TD. Your comment is confusing to me, it's not as if a 300D turbo is a rocket ship by anyone's measurement.

The MB Buyers guide says 20-21 seconds. That is wrong, however, because they are lumping the non-turbo cars in with the turbo's. A more reliable publication is:

"Mercedes Benz Diesel Automobiles"
by: W. Robert Nitske who was also the author of "The Complete Mercedes Story"

On page 133 of this publication his table indicates for a 300TD 123 Turbo 0-100Km/hour is 15.0 seconds. This calculates to 14.4 seconds for 0-60MPH.

My '96 E300 non turbo was about 13 seconds. I remembered that it was about half the time of the 240D I got out of at that time. It also had almost exactly twice the horsepower of a 240D. The non turbo '96 E300 was a little faster than a 123 300D turbo, so I thought that roughly splitting the difference was correct. I was wrong the 123 turbo is almost as fast as the early 210 diesel.

I stand corrected, and I guess humiliated because I didn't think that a 123 300D turbo was a rocket ship.

Have a great day,

What???

Larry, where did I ever state the 300DT as being a rocket ship? I never meant to initiate it as one either. Was just curious as to 0-60... That's all... Next time I'll be more specific as to the exact model, year, VIN, factory of origin, and build date so there won't be any confusion as to which 300D I'm talking about....

slydel 11-01-2001 09:44 AM

I didn't think there was enough time between tank top ups to get to 60.

LarryBible 11-01-2001 11:51 AM

slydel,

Yes, something like that. Maybe it was not taking into account the extra time for turning the hour glass over the second time.

Have a great day,
