Wierd high pitched noise--wheel bearings?
I was out on the interstate today in my 86 190d 2.5 when I started hearing a metalic noise--it sounded like I was dragging a chain. The noise did't change with engine rpms, and at first only occurred over 70mph. At one point, I had to brake hard, and it went away for the next 30 miles or so, but came back after I braked again. This time it was present at all speeds. It doesn't change tone when I brake, and there is a little bit of vibration at all speeds, even though my front tires were recently balanced when new lower ball joints were installed
Does this sound like wheel bearings that need to be re-packed. It's hot out and I drove a good bit farther today than I normally do--would hot wheel bearings caused by lack of grease make this jingling metalic chain dragging sound? What is a fair price to have these repacked? |

My money's on the blower motor. Wheel bearings make a whaump, whaump, whaump or a grrrrlllllllllll noise.

After a drive, put your hand on the hubs and see if one is hotter than the other. Good front wheel bearings won't heat up a hub beyond lightly warm.
