Why remove the EGR valve
 

An other newbie question why do you remove the EGR,better power?

more power and a small boost in MPG's.

Just disconnect the vacuum lines and plug them.

The EGR system on the 617's is a failed attempt at reducing emissions. In reality it causes gunk to build up in the intake/head, and reduces power/efficiency. It's complicated vacuum valve controls often cause problems for the locks/HVAC/transmission systems. Many recommend removing it, as it has no benefits (Ecological nor performance)

So better to remove,or just block off vac lines,?

i did both on my 83 300D. blocked it off to fix the emissions "mistake" and plugged the lines to avoid the vacuum issues. got a nice kit off of e-bay from a member. he has a website too, google monster craftsman.

Most (including myself) notice at most a small amount of power and economy improvement but the intake manifold definitely stays cleaner. In theory, the engine runs a little cooler and produces fewer oxides of nitrogen. The simplest fix is a BB in the vacuum line; lacking a BB, you can use a soldering iron to melt closed the end of the plastic vacuum line and stick it back into the rubber connector. It will look the same but do nothing.

Sometimes the procedure is a function of the state or country of the vehicle's residence and the inspection laws therein. If you have to be inspected, you'll want something easily reversible; if there is no inspection, take the blame thing off (but keep it in a box somewhere, just in case).

I just have things plugged off. The engine bay will look cleaner with the valve removed, but no difference from the first sentence.

I don't think mine was working when I removed it. If I remember correctly it was stuck open. A BB wouldn't have done any good.

I blocked my EGR and took off the Black Box that on top of the valve cover too :D

I left the black box alone but did replace the connectors that go to the drivers side vac links with a one fewer connector.
On one car I removed the black box altogether.

I have removed mine on my '83 300D, but have not cleaned the IM. How much of an improvement would this afford me, better performance, improved MPG ?

I recently removed the IM on the "99 E300D and I was shocked at the built up crud.

I removed all the vacuum lines related to the EGR... I don't want places that can leak on a system I'll never use. Neither of my diesel cars have a working EGR now, and as long as I can I'll keep them that way.

Depends on how badly the intake is blocked. You might see a few per cent improvement but it depends on how carefully you monitor your mileage and whether you actually monitor performance, e.g., dynomometer or just "feel" that the engine has more power. I definitely "felt" that our '96 E300D had a little more power after cleaning its badly crudded-up IM. For most of us, the right foot has a larger effect upon fuel economy.
