thinking of buying a 300SDL

Looking at buying a 300SDL, 86 I believe.
He says it has a small tick when idleing cold, and also one from the trans.
Also hard to start.

What else do I look for when inspecting this car?
All of mine so far have been the 300SD's.

Check the coolant for oil, the '86's have an aluminum head that can crack if (ever) overheated....a tick would be a lifter on that motor...pretty common. Aside from the engine, the rest of the car is virtually the same as an SD....

Honestly I prefer the 617 diesel over the 603, but the 603 is smoother and has a bit more power.

hard start is probably glow plugs and relay. HitmanX has a great write up on how to improve that with an afterglow mod.... Lifter isn't a big deal. Tranny is easy to fix.... Get a compression check. Also, head gasket can blow out between the chain case and cyl 1. Also, run the car up to operating temp, and spray a little water with soap around the injector sites... If you see bubbles, it means taht you need new crush washers and heat shields...
Make sure there's not a lot of oil in the fresh air intake... Just remove the top pipe and have a look. Means turbo seals...
For the cracked head, take a coolant pressure tester... Watch for excessive pressure at operating temp... also, pressure the system up to the capacity of the rad cap. Walk away, and come back in 3 hours. if it's lost more than 2-3 pounds, you've got trouble... Either leaky hoses or head crack....
ac
compression leakdown test wouldn't hurt.... will also diagnose a cracked head....

If you were not on the other side on the USA I might think about it.
Thanks for the input so far.
