blower motor, can it go faster?

I have been working on the climate control system for a few weeks. so far I have fixed the AC system and after many trials fixed or replaced all of the vacuum actuators and switchover valves. I believe it is now working to factory specs. the issue is this. now that all of the vents are moving, my AC sucks. when I originally fixed the AC, the vacumm wasnt working to the switchovers and a few valves and pods were bad. so my system was :

open recirc
closed floor
closed defrost
closed main flap
open top

this resulted in ice cold air blowing in my face at good velocity

now with the system fixed and AC on high fan on high the sysstem is:

open recirc
open main
partially open defrost
open floor
open top

this results in a pittance of cold air blowing in my face and it takes about 30 minutes to cool the car.

I kinda liked the high velocity cold air in the face, I was wondering if the blower speeds can be increaesed or if anyone has put in a bigger blower motor, maybe from a bigger or newer MB? could the old one just be weak?

Your evaporator is probably clogged up with many years worth of dust and crud. If the blower sounds like it is going full blast and the volume coming out of the vents is low and all of the actuators are working that's where I would look next. I have seen some pulled from cars which were 90%+ blocked! The air would just go around them - what little could that is. That is why the new cars with the dust filters are a big advantage...unless you don't change them!

bummer, I think the evap was changed by the PO, but is there a good way to inspect it? I really dont want to break my AC system seal and I definitely am not ready to pull the dash

If the CD is like the SD you can insert a small digital point & shoot camera (with flash and chime to alert you that it's done focusing) into the evap box (remove blower to access). Just blindly take shots in the general direction of the evap slightly changing angles as you go.

Here's a shot of mine before cleaning. Note rats nest of leaves and twigs being converted to compost at far end.

Lutz, I have also often wondered about this same thing. Sometimes i'll reach over and close the passenger side vents so I can blast all the cold air in my face. I also hate it at idle because the blower motor slows down.

first I will check the evap for clogging, that picture reminds me how the oak leaves here can find every small crack. after that Im thinking of adding some supplimental buttons to the CCU that will control the vent pods specifically. I can just wire an on/off switch to the switchover valves and control them by themselves

Rip out the whole blasted mess, and install one from a 240D with manual controls.

I put it on the middle button, which cuts out the windshield, and closed the pass side vents and its tolerable. unfortunately my 4 speed grenaded 2 blocks from the house, I was able to limp home in 1st-2nd but 3rd-4th makes an aweful racket. luckily I have a spare steel case 4 speed in the barn. its already swapped in, just need to add linkage, drive shaft and fill the box with trans fluid and I hope to be back in business tomorrow

I took a water hose and a long handled brush to mine - just make sure your drains are working - i got lots of dust and crap out of mine.. Works better now - doesnt smell either.
