Glow Plug control unit problem

car is '94 124 E300D wagon with 606 NA engine...

...trying to troubleshoot a problem with my car- an intermittent fault with the glow plug control unit and/or wiring I'm guessing: most times on first start of the day I get pre-glow as normal- light on dash comes on, car starts fine. But often then when I go to start it again same day I get no pre-glow and she won't start (unless engine is still hot of course). I've opened up the glow plug unit and tested it (works fine when being tested of course), cleaned connections and terminals, checked the connectors and wiring as best I can, checked for power at the control-unit harness, checked OVP... Can't see any obvious bad solder joints on the board of the control unit or component failure... so was just wondering if anyone else has had the same problem? It can work fine for days then start playing up again, and I have no other electrical problems...

cheers...

Apparently there is a Coolant Tem. sensor that could go bad and the Glow Plug Relay itself may have a Circuit Breaker inside instead of the meta Strip Fuse like the older Relays have that I guess could also go bad.

You could have an intermittent short in the wires going to the Glow Plugs that is tripping the Circuit Breaker or a intermittent fault in your ignition switch.

Also you did not say if any "Error Code" was showing up.

thanks for that link, seems like the official test/troubleshoot is what I've already done, so I'll have to try and check the wiring more closely.

don't have a code-reader so can't say if it's thrown one up...
