Wheel bearing issue

I have done the wheel bearings on 1984 300d. Passenger side is good with no issues. The driver side still has a little slop in it. New bearings, chases, crush washer, spacer, ect. The nut is turned as far as it can go. Still slop. Pulled the hub thinking I forgot to put in the crush washer. Nope is was there. Any ideas?

There is a tutorial on this in the Resources section. It is under DIY Articles.

I did mine recently. I don't remember a crush washer or spacer? Maybe that is your problem? Unless you are referring to the rear grease seal.

All I remember pulling out to clean was 2 bearings and a big nut. Then replacing the inner grease seal before re-installation.

The crush washer is whats creating the slop. it is holding the bearings apart. the tighter you tighten the nut the closer they will get. the washer is to prevent them from being to tight. The washer is stiff! I used the special tool to hold the nut and turned the hub with a pry bar. and checked the end play with the dial caliper every click of the ratchet.

you need to tighten it more.

I do have the special tools to do the job. The passenger side went well with no issues. The driver side nut on the other hand is bottomed out meaning that the nut has run out of thread to turn.

Hmmmmm, all i can think of is you are missing this part

the part that goes between the bearing and the nut. if you aren't missing that, I'm at a loss. do you have a picture?

The other thing that would change the dimensions is if the new Outer Bearing and the race that go with it are over all skinnier/not as thick as the old one.
This would move what I will call Flange Assembly in wards and allow more threads to stick out on the other end.
You did not say if there was any damage to the inside of the Bearing Housing?
You will need to get out an accurate ruller and measure some dimensions and see if this is happening.

I was looking at the diagrams of the Axle Flange and the over all thickness of Both of the bearings could have an effect on how far the Nut could be tuned in before running out of threads.
Also the it is the Inner part of the Inner Bearing that pushes against the spacer.
Also see if where the bearing butts up against the spacer is flat or is there a Radius (rounded edges). Compare it to the Old Bearing.
