Stuck window question

I've searched and read a number of the posts on window regulator and other power window issues but I'm still not sure how to diagnose my problem. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

My car is a 1980 300td. My front passenger power window is stuck halfway up. When I push the button to roll the window up or down I can hear the motor working and the back side of the window will move about an inch in either direction. The front side of the window stays put-- so it's sort of moving just a little bit at an angle (if that makes sense). I can't push it up or down at all manually.

I've taken the door panel off to look inside but I'm not sure what to look for. I'm wondering if the rail that holds the window glass is off the track but its hard to see because it's stuck right in the middle of the door. Today I will take the driver's side panel off to compare. And advice that could help is much appreciated. I'm fairly handy with mechanical repairs but don't know too much about electrical stuff.

For now I'd be happy if I could just get the window up and keep it in the closed position (mostly to keep out rain-- not so much to keep someone from stealing my 8 track player :P)

thanks in advance.

My guess is your regulator is broken. I had the same type of problem
with my drivers door. pulled the regulator out, and the two rivits that
hold it together were snapped off.

replaced it with a new one and all has been fine for the past 6 years or so.
Pricy little bugger, got it from my indy think he charged $135.

check in the junk yards for one.

You'll need to get the window down most of the way to check if one of the three bolts that hold the window to the regulator are still there, should be. But sounds like you're going to have to pull it to fix it.
You may be able to get it in the up position by having a helper "persuade" the window up while you hit the switch.
Other than visualizing if it's in the channel, not sure what you can do.
I recently swapped out a regulator, the frame on my old one was cracked.

Thanks for the quick replies. I've been looking at pictures and I get an idea of how things are supposed to go together in there.

Any suggestions on how to get the window down more?

^^Use a helper to guide it down while you hit the switch.

Exact same thing happened to me about a week ago. Turned out my window jumped the track in the front part of the door. I was able to persuade it back into place without breaking anything...

Got the window closed but not fixed

Yup. Turns out the window had slipped out of the track at the front. I was able to gently, as everyone suggested, "persuade" the glass back into the groove and coax it back up. So my main problem is solved: the window is closed, the interior is dry and 8 track player is safe :)

But, the window's still not working smoothly. The black rubbery strip that fits into that groove/track to hold the glass steady (sorry, I don't know the proper names for these parts) had come loose. I struggled with it for a while trying to poke the rubber strip back in with a long screwdriver but I couldn't get it to stay in place at the top of the track. After bloodying all my knuckles sticking my hand up in the door, I gave up for the day.

If anyone has tips on getting that rubbery guide-thing back in the groove, it'd be a great help. I figure it's a matter of finding the right tool to push it back in with and the right angle to reach up there and maybe a flashlight and a little glue? Anything else I should know?

Thanks as always for the advice and support!

I'm having the same problem, I got everything back in place except that and deciding I need to have that on the door panel FIRST, haven't dove back into it yet.
