Another Transmission Thread...

I apologize if this has been answered ( I DID search ) but I'm having a little difficulty with my transmission and know some guru's here will be able to help me out.

I have an 1982 240D. Motor, Trans and rear diff were rebuilt about 150,000 miles ago.

The transmission has been functioning flawlessly until about three weeks ago.

Three weeks ago the (cheap, I'm sorry) replacement half shaft I purchased came apart on me (literally was in two pieces). I had been driving with no problems, pulled into town off the highway, stopped at a stop light. When the light turned green nothing happened. The engine (of course) revved up, but no movement.

I was not thinking clearly and put it into drive...of course, with no half shaft to connect the driveline completely it ratcheted as I put her into Park.

I replaced the half shaft and she worked normally for about three days.

NOW, (LONG WINDED STORY TO GET TO THE REAL PROBLEM) it starts and runs fine, but in order to get the transmission to shift I have to nearly completely take my foot off the accelerator to get it to shift. To me (with my limited knowledge) that would indicate a vacuum problem.

I spoke with a local mechanic and he suggested the "power rod" may be out of adjustment.

ANY info/suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

On that model, vacuum control is the key to correct transmission shifting.

ONE variable vacuum valve on the injection pump & 3 on/off valves at the top of the valve cover control both shift pressure & shift timing. LOW vacuum means harsh & late shifts.

There is a very long thread on correct adjustment of that valve on this site.
