DOT approval is a self-certification by the manufacturer. Basically anything labeled "DOT-Approved" just means the manufacturer certifies it meets the DOT criteria. It's that simple. No costly NHTSA testing, nothing. The manufacturer tests or doesn't test as much as they like.

Anyway, I run the Truck-Lite LED 7-inch rounds in my 240d, they're not bad, better than sealed beams, but they're not worth the expense. I believe the Harley-Davidson-branded JW-Speaker manufactured 7-inch round LED units are far superior, but they cost even more.

Are you sure about the self certification - ? If thats the case, then basically anyone manufacturing items that are "supposed" to meet DOT, can simply "say" it does, and answer to no one?
