Oil in Vac lines?
I've got a 1982 240D. It's got 206k miles on it.
I was having a problem with the engine not stopping once the key was removed, so I started hunting for a leak. I put a vac tester on the main brake line, and got a reading of 22 Hg. I started tracing fittings and dashpots, and found that the fourway fitting for the door lock actuator was loose. But, I also noticed a little bit of oil in the vac lines. Not much, but a little. So, I'm wondering if I need to rebuild the vac pump. I believe I've got a piston style vac pump (single line coming out the top of the pump). Any help/insight you could offer would be greatly appreciated. Oh...assuming I do need to rebuild the pump, does anyone have a step by step tutorial on how to do it? I checked the DIY links, and all the photo tutorials no longer work. Thanks in advance! |

you may have a failing shutoff valve. the rebuild for the pump is really easy

Check your shut off valve with a mity vac. The most common cause of oil in the vacuum lines is a bad diaphragm in the shut off valve. Since you have adequate vacuum, I see no need to rebuild the pump.

If the Oil is coming out of the Shutoff Valve there should be Oil inside of the Tubing/Hose that plugs into the Shutoff Valve.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I am going to replace the shut off valve at the back of the IP, but wanted to know if I needed to rebuild the vac pump as well...
