1979 300D -- Removal of coolant fluid from most of engine?

OK, ... so simple/stupid question, but where do I find the drain plug for the engine and the engine block, or is there only one drain plug/spigot for the whole engine... directions would be greaty appreciated...

Thanks

On the 617, it's on the right side of the engine, just forward and slightly above the starter. It's difficult to access............

On my 82 240D (616) it is in the same place . . . 19mm . . . just above the motor mount . . .I got it from above, it does have a alumanim crush washer . . . I also pulled the lower rad hose at the rad . . . just got done flushing it tonight (4 times) your 79 should not have the turbo or egr in the way . . . doing it from the topside limits the "bath"!

OK, thanks....

OK, thanks,

I think I'll drain from the rad-hose down below the radiator... and try to avoid the momentary shower of fluid from the hose end...

Seems strange that a drain spigot was not designed into the radiator.... my 60's volvo has a spigot that you just turn and, snap, your done...

Anyway... thanks for the hints/tips...

On my 240D, just removing the lower hose will only dump about 3 qts . . . find the plug and drain the block . . . it's not really that hard . . . open your heater up to the "on" position when you flush it . . .

After draining as much as possible.. I use those 't' adapters kits that easily go into a heater hose line (by cutting it) & flush away with a garden hose till clean.

MB radiators do have a drain cock.

The plug above and in front of the starter is not a plug that you remove. When you break it loose and start turning it, the coolant flows through the hollow portion and it opens gradually as you open it further with the wrench making it quite manageable.

On my 240D I could not find a petcock, and the engine drain plug needed to come all the way out, it uses the large size oil pan crush washer . . .(I assumed the 617 was simular . . .)
