Hood Pad Adhesive?
What is everyone using to install a hood pad? I remember using an expensive 3M adhesive years ago. Do I need the heat shield or not for my 83 300D? Thanks.

I used the MB adhesive - I think the part number is in the factory service manual. Worked well, kinda like rubber cement on steroids. You'll want the heat shield for your '83 300D, it's designed to sit above where the turbo sits on the engine.

If I remember correctly the heat shield on the 300D's was only on the California model because of that "trap crap".
Mine did not have one when I peeled it off. Edit: Oops... Almost forgot. I have used Permatex spray adhesive in the past few years because I do not want to pay for the 3M $. On all the applications I have used it on... Everything is "still hanging on" with no problems.

Don't be shy, use lots of it. I used a whole can on each of two hood pads I've replaced. None have budged in over two years. I have the heat shield on both my '85 and my '87.

i would not use super trim adhesive, that's more for interior trim, such as affixing the fabric to the headliner. i used 3m super 77 and it has stuck very well

I think that it was the 3M Super 77 that I used, too. It's a good idea to use some type of roller/brayer to make sure it adheres good. I used a whole can on each of the hoodliners I've done with good results.

3M Super 77 is marketed as a "home improvement" product. 3M 8090 is an automotive product. |

Is it absolutely essential to remove the hood to glue the pad on if it's hanging on but loose in places?
(BTW, I used the 3-M Spray Adhesive many have used here.)

I don't see how it's necessary to have the pad at all. If it's hangin, slap some glue on there and close the hood.

I don't remember what I used, but I went to the auto parts store and said I need the stuff to put on a headliner. And like they said...be generous. This adhesive is expensive, but it's nice to have it done right the first time.
You don't really need to take it off either...you can use a piece of plywood under it, then shut the hood. Give it plenty of time to properly dry...probably overnight.
