617.950 Temp Senders:

I have two of these, right next to each other in the head. One is for the gauge and the other I think is for the glow plug unit. However, when I search for parts, it only shows one. Could both be the same????

Thanks for your time...Robert

almost certain they are different parts. If you switch them, you will not get the desired results.

No one shows a separate listing (that I have found) for the glow plug temperature sender on a 617.950 engine. I am in no way doubting you, it's just an elusive part...Robert

Does your car still have the loop plugs? Does the one on the end ground to the head or to the temp sensor?

Ah, my friend has a 76 300D with loop plugs and an indicator on the dash... kind of a strage system and it's hard to find info about it.

Yes....I remember that old system. IIRC, you pulled out on the fuel shutoff to glow and watched the plug in the dash. My 1978 300SD has the later style system...Robert

There is only one temp sender. The one closest to the firewall is for the engine temp. I had the same issue a couple of weeks ago. I inadvertently switched them and my temp gauge stop working (wouldn't go past 60C). From the outside they look alike, but I think the temp gauge has a larger "sensor."

Auxiliary Fan

As I recall.....the other one is for the Auxiliary Fan.....

SB

I don't feel like looking thru the schematics at the moment to be absolutely certain.

The 617.950 has the auxilliary fan switch (100°C) in the thermostat housing....

Problem solved....both senders are the same and function of glow plug unit is now restored. Both senders give identical readings at any given temperature. The sender in the glow plug that I pulled out was defective...Robert
