Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD (OM642): Opinions?

Wife's 4-runner was totalled in hit-and-run accident - car was parked and no one was inside thankfully...

So, a potential replacement option might be a the Grand Cherokee CRD with the OM642 but have never test drove one or even spoke to an owner since they are very rare here in Mass. One pro is definitely the torque: 7400 lbs of towing capacity for my 20ft sport-fishng boat (someday...) Size is another important consideration since the garage is only 19' deep and a full size gasser SUV with a V8 is too big.

Anyone here own one of these that has some words of wisdom to share? Does it use the 722.6 transmission too? I'm particularly worried about service - not many Chrysler mechanics in Massachusetts have even seen an OM642...

read some reviews and its basically a diesel ml320 powertrain with a jeep body and features. Some reviews have been postive and some have been negative.

I've looked at a few, even rented a gasser grand cherokee to see how usable the vehicle itself would be...

I liked the ride, the cloth seats (in the rental) were a bit stiff for my liking (I like firm, planted feel)... if leather can be factored into the budget, I suggest it...

fuel milage seemed a bit lower in the Jeep vs the ML320CDI my parents had, but not a HUGE difference, it did pretty well in the afternoon of extreme driving I had it.

I say yes, if not, look for a used ML CDI

I own an '08 CRD Limited and I love it. I just towed a '83 240D home from the mountains and it handled beautifully. I use B100 in it during the summer and blend with D2 in the winter. If it gets below freezing I run straight D2 though as the ETC (electronic throttle control) will shut off the engine if there is a drop in IP pressure, which would be from the bio gelling.

I'd recommend the Jeep CRD to anyone.

I took the opportunity to drive a new one as well a while ago, and I really liked them. This was when I was getting tired of the age related repairs with the 2003 X5. The dealership was a little too proud of it, and didn't like my X5 enough to come together on numbers.

My second love is Jeeps, so it was the ideal mating for me. I'm happy with my current setup, though. The Grand Wagoneer is getting more use than any other car in the fleet right now.

Thanks for the feedback. Section106: Any large ($1000+) repairs so far? No warranty hassles I assume...

My wife has one (07) and really likes it. 16K on the ticker and zero issues. I recently changed the fuel filter and it was 120 from local Jeep dealer, but local Benz dealer it was 30. I also buy oil filters from Benz dealer, same story. The biggest issue is the oil which must meet 229.51. Make sure that you physically watch dealer put correct oil in vehical. Most are totally oblivious to the uniqueness of the new diesels. VW too for that matter. I buy it online and save over 50% since it is about 12/qt at dealer. It holds 10 quarts. I personally like it and we get about 23 on highway and around 19 in town. It started last winter -15F without any GP action. I think next time we will buy the new X5 even though it is in the low 50s because the complete package is much better than the Jeep. I have a feeling the Jeep body etc will be long gone before the drive train.
