Oil Cooler Problem

I have a 84 Euro 300D NA 617.912 engine and replaced the oil cooler with a new one about 2 years ago along with both oil lines. It is now leaking again. The part # is 123-180-02-65 and I can not seem to find a new one. I do find oil coolers for the turbo models and was wondering if a turbo oil cooler would fit in my NA 300D.

Thanks
Chris

It should fit. The change in width is about 1" (from radiator to wiper fluid reservoir).

You can use it with no ill effects, do not be alarmed if your oil pressure registers lower than usual.

I went and looked and I dont think I can fit a turbo oil cooler in there. Does anyone know if the non turbo oil coolers are discontinued. Fastlane does not carry them or any other website that I can find. I am going to call around tomorrow. I do not really want a used one but may settle on one.

I have a friend with a turbo motor and turbo size oil cooler in a Euro. It should fit.

Look at different retailers for these parts, they should provide dimensions. This should give you enough info to take good measurements.

Got pictures?

That is my set up in the first picture except I do not have that big gap between the oil cooler and the window pump reservoir. I have about 1/4" between the two with the smaller cooler now. In the first picture it appears that the oil cooler is the small one, right. There must be a difference in the radiator. As for the leak it seems to be leaking in one of the downward veins, towards the radiator side.

is your radiator OE?

Call Phil @ the 1-800 number found when you click 'Buy Parts' at the top of the page. He can usually find stuff not listed.

Sorry I got rid of that smaller cooler... Seems you should have a warranty after such short time.

Honestly, if it has already failed, why would you want to buy a 'new' one?

Seems the original ones have held up pretty well for 25 years.

The one I installed in the previously mentioned thread was original and shows no signs of failure etc.. just thoughts..

The one I bought was "new" old stock, so no warranty but I paid under $200 for it. There is a junk yard here that has lots of 123s so I will see if they have one with good threads, still kind of iffy on a used one though since the system is critical. I am pretty sure the radiator is OE, it may be different since it is a euro though.

If you pull one from the JY and the threads get screwed up, there is a MB part# for the fix called "Screwed Nipples". for real . do a search.

OK, found the thread. www.peachparts.com/shopforum/showthread.php?t=104244 post#5

I'm sure if you ask someone could find you a non turbo oil cooler with good threads. It's strange to hear it leaks after such a short time.

It does seem quick to leak since some of them last 20 years of so. I called mercedes just to see how much they say 453.20 comes out of germany and germany has 0 stock with no ETA for production again. Phil is checking on it for me.

It sucks to have to replace such an expensive item, on such a critical system.

Ask a local radiator shop if they can guarantee a repair on your NOS cooler.

The members who have put Mercedes Engines in other vehicles I do not believe are useing the origional Oil Coolers.
They are using those addon Generic Oil Coolers that Gas cars and Piciup trucks use.
Where to mount it would be the main problem.
