Missing Brake Fluid
I read through the archives and unfortunately know what this means. Bad MC leaking into the booster, leaking caliper or hose.
The fluid is missing mostly in the REAR portion of the reservoir. Does this mean the problem/leak is in the front braking system (if it is the calipers or hoses)? Was doing brake work on the '85 and noticed the missing fluid on the '82. Figures. dd

Yeah, when refilling the MC, you'll notice the rear filling up first.
If there isn't any obvious leaks on the calipers, pull the MC, you can do that without removing the lines, have a new "O" ring to put back in.

thanks gents. time to go leak checking...
my MC seal is less than 15k old, from when I replaced the booster :-/ Doesnt that round seal only seal vacuum and not fluid from going into the booster itself? I dont feel any fade in the brake pedal... dd

Yes the seal is for vacuum purposes. The poster might have meant to change the o ring just on general purposes. Thats if you find brake fluid in the booster or not.

^^Yes, new gaskets, "O" rings etc. just prudent.
You have a newer one, so that shouldn't be an issue. Fluid in the booster would be a Master Cylinder failure, or old "O" ring on that.

No leaks that i could detect around calipers, hoses, lines.
I am going to pull the MC away from the booster and see if there is any fluid lurking in that region. I have a feeling that is where Im going to find the starting of a MC leak. I went for a 400 mile drive yesterday...no fluid loss.

If you do not have a warranty on the MC and it is otherwise working good but leaking in the rear. You could change the O-ring at #2. You may or may not need a sap-ring pliers to get inside; depends on what type of clip they used.

How much is missing? Too much to be from pad wear?

From the Max line to the Min line in the rear reservoir over 15k miles.

I replaced calipers on the '85 with rebuilds...and when I tested them the driver's side one failed. So the 85 is keeping me busy. Ill post back when I open the '82's system up. dd
