C4C is an embarrassment to Americans. Lets make a program that was tried and loathed by several other countries; Convince "uninformed" consumers to give up their good running cars, destroy the most valuable part of the car, release more emissions in a minute than the running car would in a decade of normal use, inflate used car market prices, make people buy cheap junk that won't last nearly as long as the "clunker" they traded in, put people further into dept financing a new car to replace the one that was completely paid off, release even MORE toxic emissions making the new clunker, not even consider donating the running cars to people that NEED a car and steal $2,000,000,000 of (already Chinese borrowed) funding from EPA projects that would actually HELP the environment so they can perpetuate this obamination.

The only consolation I feel from this shameful program is that the ONLY Diesel eligible is the 1993 Dodge 250 Cummins, no Mercedes Diesels will be harmed.
Talking about infractions and suspension right oh well how are you.

One thing that has been overlooked in this discussion is that the clunker program is voluntary. No one is forced to turn in their old Mercedes or anything else. So, don't blame the gov. or the dealers, blame the owners who don't have enough sense to do the math and keep their older cars on the road, which is almost always more economical than buying a new one, incentive or not. As usual, the enemy is us. Though I rather agree that its a misguided boondoggle, among many past and present.

That video destroying the Volvo engine literally made me throw up!!!!! My cars are my kids and I view other peoples cars the same way..."clunker" or not...I find it hard to believe that that Volvo did not hover @ or around 18mpg, and if it did not, why not give the $4500.00 incentive and donate the car to someone with say, a 1981 cutlass supreme....This is just plain gross! I'm a little guy, but I'd rip that s.o.b. out of that car if I witnessed what he was doing...Is this even LEGAL????

I hate American politics.

That was a beautiful Volvo and BMW. Those cars don't deserve to die. They had wonderful futures as used cars.

I'm leaving this country with my w123 as soon as possible.

The Cash for Clunkers program is a terrible waste.

The only thing that will separate me from my benz is:

1. Complete engine failure

2. Petroleum use is disallowed for road vehicles.

Judging from my experience with 1, I look forward to the second one.

I will never buy an American made car, ever. The auto makers never deserved to be bailed out. Nothing would have made me happier then seeing GM collapse.

That money has yet to be allocated.

reality check and fast forward:

It has not rained in 8 months, the gvmnt is rationing fresh water a scarce resource. Entire families are given a gallon a day..... you see your neighbor watering their lawn. Is this injustice, or an exercise of free choice?

Outdated, overweight GAS cars that are nostalgic to a select few have been chosen to be removed from the roads for a good reason (and probably some not-so-good reasons).

In Japan, it is MANDATORY that you replace your engine every 40k-60k miles for pollution control.

Exactly. Every single part on every single one of those cars will be crushed into nothing. An absolute waste. An absolute crass show of ignorance. The guys in the service department at the Jeep dealership were talking about CFC while I was getting my brakes done, and they were basically laughing about how cool it was that people could get $4,500 for their junk cars. I barked out that they were also getting a lot of debt and wasting a serviceable machine. They actually admitted that yeah, that was true, but went on laughing about it and making fun of the cars they had lined up in the back.

If I were silly rich, ala Bill Gates, I would honestly put out an offer to give $500 more than the CFC program would for the first 2,000 people to apply. Then I'd arrange all the clunkers under a giant banner saying "Dear government, #%^ you." Then I'd sell the nice cars, donate the decent cars to charity and part out the rest.

I liked the Jeep that was STILL running at the end of the 6 min. video. Damn I'd have loved to have that Jeep.

I believe that my 560 1989 SEC qualifies for the C4C. At Dodge I can Get $9,000.00 trade in with matching funds from Chrysler..er..wait...from the US taxpayers. However It has been reported that Chrysler has very few cars that Qualify.....Um....no thanks. I don't want or need the car payment. I won't get near that amount from selling her (she is for sale). but I'd never turn her in to be destroyed. I'd part her out first.
BTW She'll get 22 +MPG if driven at 55 MPH. with the Cruise on and the A/C on. 19 MPG at 80.
Unfortunately, she, like all the others of the time came with a $2,000.00 Gas Guzzler Tax.

What's criminal about it is that the very existence of these "clunkers" is a product of two things: A lack of foresight by the automakers and ignorance and greed of consumers. The government's answer? Reward the industry that created this monsters and reward the idiots who bought them, then line up the cars, mock them and crush them. The people who had the foresight to buy more practical cars aren't getting anything ... of course, they're not the type of people who are asking for it, either.

It's an embarrassment. The clunkers were an embarrassment. But this is a bigger embarrassment. With a little foresight and thought, something similar could have been done in a much wiser manner. As it stands, even the sudden rush of carbuying isn't going to help the industry. All it is is a bunch of people rushing in at once to buy cars. Either the program's going to end, or you're going to run out of clunkers, or run out of idiots, whichever comes first. Then what? The industry fills up the lots with a new batch of cars, which will sit there just like they were two months ago. The infrastructure is failed. Bribing a few people to buy cars isn't going to help it. That's dumping a quart of oil in an engine that's had its oil pan torn off.
