Should I take the free Transmission or not
My Buddy has an 85 190e with a rebuilt 722.4xx with about 60K (40k miles) on it. He has offered me the parts car it is in to get it out of his driveway. The only major component that interests me is the trans since I have a 722.414 in my 190d. Given the cost of rebuilding it would seem that it is worth the effort to pull it for a spare. I have a Superior shift kit to put in it to bring it up to snuff as far as diesel shift points goes, so other than a diesel vacuum modulator I am thinking that is most of what I need. Opinions solicited. would you do it. Cheers Dan

If you have the space, take the whole car and put a tarp over it. Don't pull the transmission until/if you need it. Who knows what may happen in the next few years -- you may never need the "spare" tranny so why put any work into it now?
OTOH, if you have room for the transmission but not the entire car, sure, pull it and put it away. Rebuilds can be as much as US$3000 depending on the source. Also look over the gasser for body and interior parts that you might be able to use someday (another reason to keep the whole thing if you can).

Anytime someone wants to give you something that will cost you money later--I say take it. Take the whole car and just let it sit in the backyard until you need something off it, you might be suprised at all the small things you might pull off it as you go along that will save you $$. Plus, free parts cars don't cost you in fuel, insurance etc. and they are always sitting there at those inopportune times when the parts store is closed. I would never turn down a free MB parts car (if it was local).
