Tank screen blocked, can't remove it

The screen is blocked so I tried to remove and clean it. Someone tried to remove it before and rounded the 19mm hose fitting . I have the vent and return off and tried to pull the tank out to get more room but it will not come out with the fitting on. Any ideas on this other than cutting the hose and using a socket on the screen ?

Make, model and year of car would help? Fill out your sig. If its a 300D, you can go to Northern Tool and get a 46mm socket ($9) to pull the screen. Just snip off the hose at the bottom of the fitting you speak of. You can replace the fitting and use a regular piece of hose once you pull the screen and get the old fitting out of the original screen. Or you can just replace the screen and start from scratch.

Either way you do not need to remove the tank unless the screen nut was rounded off. I found it to be pretty easy when I did mine.

It's on the 93 300D. I'm not sure why my sig is not showing anymore . Is it a 46mm for the 124's also ? Looks like I will just cut the hose and replace the fitting.

Your's is probably different than my '81 wagon, but I was able to put a pipe wrench on the outside of mine. It looked like someone before had done the same thing so I just went for it. It worked fine.

Thanks for the link, lots of good information there. In the section for the tank removal.... what is item 51/1 ? I have item 51 the vent, but do not have that one.

Seems to me the 124s also use a 46mm socket. There's an SAE equivalent (sorry I don't remember the size) in case you can't find that big a socket in metric.

PaJon,

I think you are going to need to resort to the 46mm socket. I believe the tank screen is aluminum and the hose fitting is steel - so its probably seized.

Normally, heat would work, but not here

I got my 46mm socket on ebay for $10 shipped.

A close SAE equivalent is 1 13/16". 46mm = 1.811", 1 13/16=1.8125"

Not exact. Just use the 46mm.

Not sure how easy it is on your car but I tried to get a 45mm socket on my 350SLC and it did not work. The tank is lined on the outside with foam which made getting that socket on a pain in the rear because the socket would not grip well enough.

Do yourself a favor and buy a new tank screen and then get the old one out with an easy out. It will ruin the inside threads on the tank screen but it will get it out of there.

I had to put a 3 foot extension on my ratchet before i could break the threads loose.

An update: I cut the hose and was able to remove the fitting with a deep well 19mm. The screen came out with out any problems. The screen was covered/blocked with a black slime. Ended up pulling and flushing the tank. I was able to clean most of the slime out. The sending unit had about an inch of this oily slime on the bottom of it. It looks and feels like oil. Any idea what it could be ?

Yep, definitely fungus. Run a few tanks of biobor or startron, those will kill any growths in your fuel system. A lot of us have had the pleasant experience of nasty black diesel.
