Bad Glow Plug Relay- pics of old unit after removal

here's a couple of pics from my 124 E300D relay that was intermittently working (now replaced with a new unit) just wondering what could've caused the melting of the plastic? Just old age/component failure? The circuit board looks ok at the back, though there's some black marks on the front as you might be able to make out in the pics (probably from the plastic)...

Nice picture. I guess there is a lot of Amps flowing there. So after many years and burning of the contacts the resistance just built up to a point where a lot of heat was being generated.

On second thought, does the relay top come off easily? I wonder if cleaning the contacts should be a maintenance item?

yea, it comes off easily- just 4 screws and then it slides off. I suspect this was the original relay so it did pretty well for 193k...
