Question Is it a crime to junk a good running MB diesel engine?

Guys,

I have a good running 240D engine in my parts car. It has 267 k, but starts on the first crank in the winter. Its got some decent blow-by, and smokes a little bit, but nothing I don't think a little attention couldn't fix. I just don't need it, and I need to get rid of the car soon.

Or, would nobody in their right mind use this as an engine donor with so many miles, and should I just send it to the yard after I strip the rest of the parts off? What would you do...(no I cant keep it :-) )

Opinions?
dd

Put it on Craigslists for free if they remove it. I am sure someone in the area will take it.

Yes it is a crime, and if I were local I would make the citizen's arrest myself!

Seriously, though, take the couple of hours and pull the engine before you scrap the car--you can pull an engine suprisingly quickly if you aren't trying to save the car it's in--just cut hoese, wiring, etc and pull the trans with the engine, alot easier than separating it.

Just remember, the definition of junk: something you keep for years and throw away the day before you need it.

How about checking with local trade schools and see if they'll take it off your hands and pull the engine as a rebuilder? Failing that, I agree, put it on CL and somebody like myself might remove it and putter around with it and maybe use it for some interesting little project, as mentioned previously.

Great suggestions....

I can't keep the engine sadly, so pulling it for my own storage is no good.

The local yard offered me $100 for the whole car. They even said I could pull the entire interior...they just want the scrap metal.

My first shot at putting it craigslist yielded no takers for $200. Ill try again.

Just my opinion, but I think giving it to somebody that wants it is worth the 100 bucks in good karma. CL-"Free to good home"...or maybe "$100, negotiable."

If you're going to scrap it anyway, I'd just offer it for free to anyone who will pull it themselves. Won't take any effort on your part, and the engine will go to someone who needs it.

I've been there...

I had a rebuilt 240D engine in my garage for 3-4 years. The engine ran great, but the car it was in had turned into rust.

I pulled the engine along with the automatic transmission and put it in my garage. I tripped over it for a couple of years until I just gave it away to get rid of it.

If the bone yard will give you $100, strip the car and take the money....your ankles will thank you...hee...hee...

Yes it is indeed a crime! Keep it on craigslist at a low price....someone will take it. If I lived in that area it would probably be me taking it.

If there was a 240D in my area for $200, I would trip over my own feet getting there as fast as I could!

It's not a crime. It's just a bummer.
