Fuel starvation issue in 300TD wagon
When I near 4-5 gallons of fuel left in my '85 300TD wagon, the engine starts to act fuel starved. At ~3 gallons in the tank the car acts "empty" (and no longer runs). The engine can "pull" fuel from the tank fine if going downhill. Going up hill will stall the car if only 3-4 gallons are left. If I fill the tank up the problem disappears.
My fuel guage works correctly. Both fuel filters have been replaced. There are no fuel leaks. The fuel strainer has been removed, cleaned, and reinstalled (it wasn't clogged). When I pulled the strainer, I verified there were still at least 3 actual gallons of fuel in the tank, but the car acted empty. When draining the 3 gallons of fuel from the supply line on the tank, there did not appear to be any resistance to the flow. The rear wheels were on ramps. What else could cause a starvation issue?

I'd guess that your supply and return lines are switched. Swap them at the tank and see if you're still having the stalling.

Weak lift pump may also cause this problem I think. The wagon is more susceptible to these issues because the tank is flat and low, unlike the sedan tank. Mine will cut out when low as I go around corners so if I'm low on fuel I can only drive in a straight line.

This sounds similar to the post that fruitcakesa posted yesterday. Could your fuel tank vent be blocked (creating a vacuum as the fuel level goes down)?

The vent is a line that starts at the expansion tank and ends at the fill neck.

Run a piece of straightened out, sorta, coat hanger wire up from the vent as best you can.

Tubing cleaning tool
I use the inside of an old speedometer cable to clean out vents and drains.
It acts like a tiny plumbers snake. Flexible and not agressive. Works good.
