Bye Bye straight pipe!!!

After having to deal with the dreaded droning that the straight pipe produce i decided to place back my old muffler w/o the kidney things. PEACE and quiet, there was less lagg on acceleration and the turbo spools a little slower but once is running at 2500 RPM just a little tap on the acclerator pedel and it spools up faster than when it was straight pipe and i lost 1 psi of boost. for those of you guys who has a 300SD and planning to do a straight pipe, i would suggest to just remove the resonator instead unless you like a bass like drone at 1500 RPM and a sweet turbo sound at idle than straight pipe it. Though I am starting to miss that sound :(

Huh? What's that? I can't hear you.

I had the resonators removed when I had my exhaust system re-done, standard Ansa muffler, works well.

I had mine off for about a year too. I also put the muffler back on without the kidney thing.

I told you.But this winter I will take off glasspak, and run it straight. Why? Windows up.

is it louder than the sound of wind in your ears when the windows are down on the highway? i just turn my stereo up to cover that, can you do the same with the straight pipe drone, just turn the music up?

so is that straight pipe for sale now?

lowriderdog37 08-08-2009 03:29 PM

I have been on more of a silent trip lately. I thought it sounded good with the windows down, but when I am on long trips, I don't like to hear it. After putting on the hood pad (which makes a ton of difference) the pipe was the only thing I could really hear. Now I can drive with the windows up and it's nice and quiet.

I was thinking of making a two way system, one pipe goes to the muffler one is a straight pipe, using a flap to divert the exhaust.

The current issue of Car Craft describes how to install an electric exhaust cut out.

You can get cable-operated 2" exhaust cutouts for ~$30

The straight pipe exit matters too:
Out the back it's not too bad
Out the side can be kind of loud

As always, adding a turndown tip should help quiet things.

Running no exhaust sounds great for short runs, but would probably be horrible on the highway.
