Anything to check while oil pan off???

I have the oil pan off the '83 240D today, changing out the gasket to take care of a little leak. Is there anything that I should check out or inspect while the pan is off? Not entirely familiar with the lower half of the engine.

Thanks.

You're not going to be able to see too much with it off. You'll be able to see the first two rods and a couple of the mains caps for the crank shaft, and the oil pump. I'd just look around as much as possible to see if there is any irregular wear marks, or shavings in your pan. Look at the screen on the end of the oil pickup to make sure it's clear.

Clean the metal chips out of the oil pump screen.
Check that the rubber boot/screen assembly on the oil pump is in good condition.

While the pan is off, consider replacing the turbo oil drain grommet (Just kidding)

This is my first oil change on this one since I brought it home, so I actually stuck magnet in the oil as I drained it out - thankfully nothing was clinging to it once drained. The pan shows no shavings either, so that is a little comforting. The screen looks clear as well.

One thing I did notice is that the "feet" of the pump (most downward projections) were touching the bottom of the pan (you could see the marks on the interior of the pan). I don't think this caused a problem, but I was wondering if that was normal. It looks to me like the pan has been banged up enough that the bottom is a little concave. I think I am just going to buy a new pan anyway, this one has a weld spot on it - so apparently someone hit something at somtime.

Thanks.

No metal shavings that I can see, boot and screen look good.

Turbo oil drain grommet - I think they forgot to install it at the factory!

The oil pump isn't necessarily touching the pan (if it is, you will see a grove worn in it). It is common to have a circle on the pan just from the proximity of the pump & pan, and due to high rpm of the gathering of oil. If the pan is in fact dented, that's a different story.

be sure not to tighten the oil pan too tightly when putting it back on. it really doesn't take much to break one of those gaskets. i broke two in a row and just left the second one on cracked. i do have a tendency to overtighten everything though. doesn't really leak badly at all even with it cracked.

ok depends what oil pan. If you just take off the lower oil pan you can remove the oil pump and check the condition of the gears and other parts of the oil pump.

No, I didn't, but I still can because I haven't pieced it all back together yet. Does it just pull apart?

Yeah, I should figure out what the torque is on those bolts. I managed to strip the head on one trying to get it out. Wonder if I can just pick one up at a local parts place - 5mm hex head.

Sometimes the rubber for the pickup gets hard/brittle....if it is I'd replace it. I replaced mine out of paranoia a couple years ago...I think it was about $30-35 from the dealer....
