the 300sd is officially back in my possession.

as a few of you probably knew, a few years back i gave it to my dad as he was in need of a reliable vehicle and then i traded his pos in on the tacoma. well, i have recently found out that i am a father to be and the dakota that my fiance has been driving just wont do. besides the fact that there is no back seat to put a baby in, its a manual transmission and has no a/c. besides that it is very reliable. we had discussed trading my dad yet again and he agreed that it would be a good idea. he mentioned that it needed a "little work" though. well, a little work didn't do it justice. ive spent the last two weekends working on it. replaced the brushes in the alternator, replaced the battery(he put it on the charger once a week) new turbo drain seals, pan gasket, resealed the p/s pump(this thing was leaking so bad the engine bay was covered),flush with new filter, two air cleaner mounts, welded the separator drain tube mounting bracket back on,cleaned the banjo bolt as well as the air intake while i had it apart. i had decided that since i had an updated b2 piston sitting around, i would install it and new seals, when i did the filter and fluid. WOW what a difference. no more slip when shifting. changed all fluids and filters, and did a diesel purge. adjusted the valves and she runs like new.

the a/c hasn't been blowing very hard for a few years. all flaps open properly and the fan has no problems. i took all of the front carpet out so i wouldn't get it wet, removed the blower, sprayed the evaporator with acid free coil cleaner, and then hosed it out with the garden hose.(be careful not to use too much pressure, as you will damage the fins). it now blows like new. all that i have left is to replace the tires. (Dad doesn't know how to check pressures apparently)

Cool ... good work ... it would take me half a year to get through the list of stuff you did. Oh yeah, congrats on the kid.

How about some more details on this cleaning procedure. Mine has 26 years of accumulation and I assume needs to be cleaned. I assumed I had to follow the Morrison method and remove dash, etc. to get to the evaporator for cleaning. I've really been putting off that task. What cleaner did you use? Spray and soak? The drain can handle a flush from the hose? etc.

i took the side kick panels out so i could see the drains. one was deteriorated so i replaced it with a piece of heater hose. with the blower motor removed theres enough room to get your hand in there and barley enough room to get a can of cold cleaner in there. you pretty much have to do it blind. i used a coil cleaner sold at home depot. its in an aresol can. i sprayed it in waited about 10 mins and washed it out. it definatly made a difference

Thanks, Did you observe a lot of dirt, lint, etc. coming out of the drain? Mine is a 123 so it may have a different design. I don't see the coil if I remove the fan assembly and stick in a digital camera. Anyone try this on a 123?

i didnt, but i wasnt watching either. i know, there was a huge difference in air flow. im pretty sure they are the same design, but i may be mistaken. if you remove the blower and reach in towards the drivers side(this is all happening in the opening for the blower) you should feel the evaporator.

My digital camera sees and my hand feels what seems to be a baffle directing airflow toward the front of the car (back side of the evaporator). I can't feel anything like fins on an evaporator. Maybe a spray can with a bent plastic tube nozzle is what I need?

No - not sure of anything I can't see. The blower pushes the air through the evaporator so that must be the backside of the evaporator and I think that's the engine side. Mine drains on the driver side of the center hump. So if the SD has drains behind the kick panels, they must be different designs of air boxes.

the sd drains on both sides of the center hump. behind the SIDE kick panels. maybe turn the system on with the blower out and see if theres a flap in the way? mine was just inside the housing.

Congratulations on the new baby.

Congratulations on the up coming wedding, are we all invited? It would look impressive with 20 - 30 mercedes or more, around the church and the reception. where do we send wedding gifts and money?

Good to hear you are going to make a honest woman out of her. they say, If you want the milk, ya gotta buy the cow"

That is great you got the SD back and all the little thing neglected, repaired or replaced.
