I lost power on the highway!!! (story)
So today on the way home on the highway, i started to loose power and it started to shake, i looked at my gas gauge and i saw it was half full, as i was pull over i begin to ponder on what could be wrong, Head gasket failure? Loss of compression? A hole in the block? Broken FLEX DISK!?!? Turbo Failure? Blown oil cooler line!?!?!?! So when i came to a stop 3 of the 5 cylinders were running, i quickly Shut it off and pop the hood and inspect, I saw no smoke (big relieve) No large oil spots. I was stumped until i saw the primary fuel filter was BONE DRY. The first thing came in mind is walk 5 miles to get 1 gallon of diesel, that was a great idea!!! Then i realized i had a Quart of transmission fluid in the trunk and 5 Quarts of Motor oil, i remember you can run it W/O problems for a shot period, so when i opened the trunk i immediately saw DIESEL KLEEN!!! At first i was SO HAPPY, but then i realized what would happen if i ran this straight, will it ruin some thing, in desperation i poured in half a Quart of it and primed my car, and stared it up, AND IT RAN!!!!!! But it was shaky, i quickly drove my 300SD to the closest diesel station which was 3 miles, When i got there i was running on 2 cylinders, I quickly swtich off the car and fill it up with diesel, give a good priming and drove home. What should i do after this incident, crack each injector line and bleed it? Its running fine. As far as gas sender unit i need to open it up and check if its stuck.
WHAT A DAY LOL

Lucky man. If your sender is measuring gas, I'm surprised it registered anything.

In an opposite issue, this past weekend while camping, it rained like no tomorrow for about 10 hours, so we were unable to get our camp fire going that evening. I had some shop towels in my trunk, so I soaked three towels in diesel from under the hood of the car. (Pulled cigar hose, pumped the primer a few times) Placed the waded ball of fuel-rags in the center of the wood for the camp fire, got it lit, and it burned hot and strong for about 15 mins, long enough to dry out a lot of the wood and get our fire going. We were then able to dry out all the other wood using the fire. Success! It brought me diesel-driving bragging rights.

The only thing left to do is replace the stuff from your trunk that you used as emergency fuel.

Most gasser fuel lines are fittings, not just a hose on barb clamped....= way more difficult in the first place. Gas burns too fast too, and the vapors would be an explosion hazard. Diesel is the only safe and awesome solution. (or kerosene)

same thing happened to my 240D on the highway, worked great above 1/2 tank and hardly at all below - replaced primary and secondary filters and voila

One nice thing about the returned fuel system on our cars is that if we run across a fellow dieseler who's out of fuel, we can pull the 6' of fuel line out of the trunk, remove the cigar hose, replace it with the fuel line, start our engines and pump a few gallons over to get her on her way.

Was it D2? I tried that with B100 and it was a b*tch to light even with a MAP gas torch! I was using it to light my BBQ I guess maybe soaking a rag instead or putting it on the charcoal might have worked... It sure did smell good though once it caught
