I found a can of ether when I initially deep-cleaned the whole car That, mold and a collection of really crappy 90s nu-metal cds - linkin park, limp bizkit, etc.

That's my story and I am sticking to it..

..to my wife's consternation a single large, topaz earring (that did not belong to my wife). It took some time to convince her that it was probably the previous owner's.

She is still suspicious about that...
Is that really the story you want to go with?

I think it better if you claim the earring was your for a new fashion look (make sure to peirce the correct ear)

A 1986 dated dry cleaning receipt, and a 1923 gold engagement ring. The ring was wedged under a vacuum hose cover under the driver's seat. The second owner of my 300cd lost it sometime in the 1980s. The guy had gone to lengths such as digging up his yard to find his parent's engagement ring that he lost. I got in contact with him and returned his ring.

Maybe I should take out the back seat too, not that anyone could actually fit back there.

My 78 240D still has a cigarette butt and lighter down in the crevice by the door that I can't get at. I'm about to pull the seat for rust repair, anyway, but for now it adds to the car's, uh, charisma? Other than that it was mostly Wawa receipts, a pen, a fossilized citrus peel and a towing receipt (surprisingly, not for the Mercedes but for the PO's Mustang). Nothing real exciting.

My 87, which has been in my family and only my family, was actually juicier when I first inherited it. Lots of coins, which is always a winner, straw wrappers, a McDonald's bag (empty, thankfully), a couple kids' stickers (the kid the doctor gives you) and, the topper: A used syringe. That isn't as edgy as it sounds -- my little sister has type I diabetes and had to have insulin shots until a couple years ago. Still, that would have been awkward if the mechanic or a stereo install guy had found it.

That's actually a really cool story ... and cool that you were able to get it back to the guy.

Under the front seats, a silver fork (not a plastic one), the usual coins, LOTS of horsehair, parking receipts, etc. In the back seat, I found a strip of paper that had the vehicle options list encoded in it.

Replaced the front pads with the orange foam padding and no more horsehair smell. Needed a VERY thorough cleaning though but well worth it!

In my 1981 300D I found about two inches of horsehair.

With my little treasure trove I was able to contact the original owners.

My 300d linked to Enron? Original owner found!

In the Squash it wasn't under the seat, it was in the glove box. But it does follow a familiar theme developing.

Folks lives sure are more exciting than mine.....

Lots of horse hair over the years, lots of change. A few broken off sculpted fingernails in hot pink, pens, more change often from the 80's.......

haha, my favorite part of this pic is the sliver of paper that says "I promise to appear at the time and place shown..."

I found my automotive independence.

While in college, I found plenty of great cars that I needed a few hundred extra dollars to buy. A '53 Packard Carribean for $2000, a '56 T-Bird for $1200, and a '71 Challenger convertible for $900. My father wouldn't help out at all. Those cars weren't practical. The ones I bought: '32 Plymouth hot rod, '65 Mustang, '68 Torino GT, '63 Sunbeam Alpine weren't practical either.

Right before I got married, he found his idea of a really practical car with German engineering, a '68 Opel Kadett station wagon (with an automatic transmission, yet) that showed less than 40,000 miles. He bought it from a friend of a friend who was selling his deceased mother's car. It had never been driven over 55 MPH, never more than 50 miles from home and meticulously maintained. He shelled out $400 for it.

From the get go, it wouldn't start when the temperature was under 50 degrees, a big problem in Michigan. Gallons of ether wouldn't help. With the auto tranny, it couldn't be push started. The exhaust pipe broke next to the exhaust manifold. It had TORX bolts on the exhaust manifold connection ($80 a set at the time for the TORX bits). The starter motor went out. $600 at the dealer, $400 at the auto parts store. I bought a rusted out Kadett for $75 to get the starter. Thankfully, I had the TORX bits. Finally I got another car and got the Kadett ready to sell.

For the first time, I removed the rear seat. I found a receipt from three months before my dad bought the car where the engine had been replaced in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. It listed the mileage at 89,000.

Never again did I get comments other than "nice car" about anything I bought.
