I've found R-12 here on the board for $20-25/can with a 609, and on Craigslist for $12-15/can.

There is some interesting information is this thread but can some of the user spouting off laws cite your source? I think it is good how the truth comes out in these threads and am just interested on where you get the information for these laws or know of them if you do not have a HVAC license.

Yes, the actual law is what I was looking for and the part it says about 50,000 fine and the 10,000 reward for reporting someone. Just wondering where you got this information?
I am not interested in taking the test I will pay someone to make sure the refrigerate is properly handled.

It's actually a 25K fine, per day, and there is a reward. It's all on the EPA's site. Also there is requirements for working on your own system without a license.
If you have a license, you must use certified equipment but you can charge for your work. If you're not licensed, you can use any equipment as long as it meets certain performance specifications, which are not as tight as certified equipment, but you can't charge for your work. |

I went ahead and got my license so I could buy R12 and service my own system.
That being said, I'll still have to find another shop to recover it if I need that done, as the recovery gear is not cheap, especially the recovery and filtration gear that the EPA regs really seem to want you to be using.
