I didn't buy a 240D

A few weeks ago I asked you folks whether I should buy a 240D. You answered with a resounding "Yes! Just make sure it doesn't have any rust!"

Well, I didn't heed your advice.

I didn't get a 240D. Instead, I bought a 1983 Euro 300D with 191,000 miles. And, well, it has a bit of rust. Ok, quite a bit of rust in all the usual places -- wheel wells and rocker panels. But the engine's sound, it runs well, and the service records indicate no major issues in its history.

It's so much fun to drive and did well on both back roads and the highway this past weekend when I brought it back from Frederick, MD to my home in Philadelphia. Had both the state-of-the-art Pioneer stereo (with cassette player) and a/c going full blast with no overheating or loss of power.

She's a little homely but I'm not holding that against her. It's what's inside that matters, right??

Job #1 is to get her inspected and legal (tomorrow). Job #2 is dealing with some of the rust issues. In addition, there are some fairly malevolent scratches on the roof and trunk -- down to bare metal in some places -- so I'm facing some paint issues as well.

A few questions:
Can anybody in the Philly area recommend a good body shop that won't break the bank, if there is such a thing?

In the middle of the rear view window, resting behind the seats, is a light (a little bit larger than an old radar detector -- you can kind of see it in the third photo) that's all taped up with electrical tape, I'm not sure why. It's ugly and I'd like to replace it. Can you tell me if this was standard or whether it was an add-on (possibly to pass a state inspection)?

What manual/s would you recommend I buy to help me with repairs, and is the Euro model all that different (besides the 4-speed transmission) from the US version if/when I need to order parts?

Thanks. I'm sure this is the first of many posts to come.

Congratulations! A lot of us would really, really like to have the 4 speed Euro ( but working on the 240D is a lot easier).

I can't see the light you are talking about, but if it is supposed to be a 3rd brake light, then , no no W123 ever had them.

Most important parts can be interchanged with 240Ds and 300Ds. Trim items will be hard to find. You should be able to get EVERYTHING from MB, but you may have to pay dearly for it and wait...and wait.

It wouldn't hurt to get the factory service manuals (FSM) for your car, depending on how much you want to get involved. You may want to let your mechanic borrow them.

Rick

This the one?

Hi Rick,

Is this the manual you'd recommend? http://www.bentleypublishers.com/isbn/9780837612133/index.html

I'm an information hound by nature, so anything I can learn about my car is great. I'd also like to be able to repair as much as I can on my own. Or at least understand what my mechanic is talking about if (When?) something goes wrong.

Wendy

Although Bentley does reprint a lot of the older factory manuals , I'm not sure they did MB. The only ones I know of are printed by MB- you can find them on ebay and there are separate books for chassis, engine etc. There are also CD versions available.

Rock auto might give you a 5% off, but the BUY PARTS tab a the top of the page helps support this forum and all the free help that saves you money on repairs.

If you can, get the MB FSM. they come up on e-bay often. sometimes pricy, depending on how high you want to bid them up. there are FSM on CD form sold on e-bay, and also available from the dealer, and maybe the classic center.
I picked up a whole set of 5 FSM on e-bay a few yrs ago for $225.00 with the shipping.

I use Phil as much as possible... His prices might be a few bucks higher than rock auto, but you also get somebody who KNOWS these cars and can help you.

There are lots of stickies and tips on this site to help you.
use the advanced search feature on the site to do research as between all of us we have taken these cars entirely apart and put them bac together again.
Get some decent metric tools.
Just call on us if you need anything.
Oh and join the Mercedes Club of America (mbca.org) When you go to your local chapter meetings you will find lots of people who love our cars, especially the Euro models!
