i just got mine too and i'm having them popped tomorrow.
And post cleaning dip the Nozzle and Needle/Pintel in clean Diesel Fuel to lube them and put the Needle/Pintel back in the exact same Nozzle it came out of.

Doh! I lost my crush ring! It flew out when I hit the key. If I was smarter I wouldve remebered to remove it first. can my old one with the smaller hole be used while I look for the new one?

Making such elementary mistakes never feels good.

Either Heat Shield can be used but they are supposed to be new.

However, When I got my Volvo (uses the same parts) I did not know they needed do be changed. And, drove a year and a half with no problems.
I managed to drop a screwdriver into the Timing Belt and ended up pulling the head. The Head Gasket set came with new Heat Shields and it dawned on me that they should be changed.

You could order a new one with some other stuff and put it in when you get it.

Having 2 Diesel Cars that use the same heat shields and seeing the price rising on them; I ordered a bunch extra.
I found if you order the ones for the Old VW Rabbits they have the small Holes. At least the parts place I ordered them from gave the size of the hole so you could tell for sure what you would get.

Man!

It's hard to find someone to do this injector pop in Houston! I found one shop that a friend recommended and I should've trusted my gut and stayed away. They treated me like trash on the phone, then I drove all the way there and got introduced to their "diesel guy" whom the 1st guy promised could help me out. "Diesel guy" just kinda shrugged and said "oh, no I don't have the equipment to test that". Wha!? I visited 2 other places that I knew did work on Mercedes and called about another 7 shops. One shop downtown said they could do it for about $50.

Bummer.

Man.... it just gets crazier...

I went to one place this morning that is fairly close to my house. The guy has about a dozen various Mercedes 80's diesels out front... all of them in junkyard condition. Anyway I walk in to his tragically messy and old office, and there's this 60+ year old german sounding fellow sitting there with no shirt on. Very odd settings indeed. Anyway I tell him what's going on and he's convinced I need to open up my injector pump and play around with the timing (!!). I thanked him and left quickly.

I called another shop today and the guy who answered the phone says "you need your injector... re... shimmed??" I told him, yeah... I need it pressure tested and re-shimmed. "What. Where are you getting this term... re-shimmed?". That's when I asked if he had a diesel tech I could talk to. He then proceeds to tell me that his diesel tech is the best in town... blah blah blah....

The adventure continues.

Yes, the injectors do have shims in them.

You are looking in all the wrong places. Find a BOSCH shop.

Never would've thought to do that. Google yielded zero results on that one. I have no clue where to begin looking.

Try the big rig places or ask h-town or any of the other Houston area members. Might want a new thread for it.

UPDATE!

I did a little bit of testing. Here's what happened;

I switched injector 4 and 5. Noise reduced about 80%. Now when I pinch on the hard injector line, I can feel the tap lightly on 4 and 5. Tapping noise became very soft. Tapping sound increased slightly after engine warmed up.

Then I put inj. 4 back where it belonged and re-installed the old number 5 nozzle. Not good. Ran very rough. The whole engine shook. Ran for about 15 seconds, then decided it couldn't be good.

Re-installed monark in injector 5 and reinstalled injector. No better. The tap has a bit more distinct hard "tick" every 6-8 times. I hope I didn't screw anything up.

Still searching for a good shop.

Hmmm...
Since all injectors are supposed to be identical, as are all cylinders, it doesn't make sense that swapping 4 and 5 should make any difference, really. It should just change the cylinder that the injector pinging is in.

Perhaps you have an injector that is spraying poorly after rebuild or at the wrong pop pressure, combined with a busted prechamber in either the 4 or 5 cylinder. Or low compression in one of those cylinders, which can exacerbate a nailing injector.

But first get those injectors pop tested.. it will probably solve all your problems. It's easy enough to make your own pop tester, but if not:
