Pulling engine in 300SD this weekend... what should i watch for?

I bought a parts car for the engine cheap and want to pull the engine and trans. Any tips on this process? better with trans attached or not? The car is a wrecked 83 300sd. Any links on other threads showing picts? Thanks!

Watch for your fingers!

Keep the oil cooler hooked up to the engine.

If you want the engine and trans, pull them together.

Yep, leave them attached. Make sure to disconnect all hoses, especially the rear heater hose by the oil filter canister.....and tie the throttle linkage out of the way etc....

I've done the job twice now....its like second nature to me.... I even know every bolt and nut by sight....and know where they go.

i could remove a complete and running engine from a 300sd in two hours...

using a sawzall and a crane.

yeah. but it's all intuitive. if it's attached, detach it. go for removal with the tranny attached. major pita to remove trans and keep it attached to the car.

be sure to drain all fluids before 'parking' it on a pallet or worn tire

It is always better is the engine is not running while removing it .

If you are going to separate the trans after it is pulled and only using the engine. be sure to remove the 6 bolts that hold the torque converter to the flex plate before removing.

I didn`t do that 2yrs ago when I pulled mine, and had it on the hoist trying to get under it with it swinging on the chain. also had wife use a screwdriver in the flywheel to keep engine from turning. not the safest thing to have an engine suspended and working under it.
Thinking back, I did have the trans resting on the PU bed. but still...

there were three HP ratings on the OM616...

1) Not much power
2) Even less power
3) Not nearly enough power!! (this engine was installed only in 240D w/automatic transmissions)
