Soduim silicate in the oil. Run the engine until it locks up.

I've been told by a local junkyard that they drain the oil, pour in some resin/epoxy, run until seize.
Anything oil lubricated could/would be affected by this method.

Here in the people's republic of michigan older cars such as Mercedes are taxed the same as they were new, and insurance is rediculous (another reason I'm leaving the state). Thanks Jenny.

They have 120 days to sell parts off the car. After that whatever is left must be crushed. What they put into the engine is basically very very fine sand mixed with water. The water evaporates and the sand is left behind on the bearings.
And ya... I pay about double to plate and insure my SDL then what I pay to plate and insure my TDI... and my TDI has more coverage It costs less to put plates on my friends 2003 F350 too! -J

120 days is usually about how long a car spends in a junk yard anyways....so not much difference overall I suppose.

The yards around here started crushing them two days after the program began. It's up to them and I think a lot aren't bothering. Although maybe when they get a Mercedes or Jag they hang on to it to sell the parts ... might be worth the time and space. Seems to me though that most of the "clunkers" are being flattened right away, though, at least they definitely are around here. We had a nice sensationalist photo gallery of it on my paper's Web site.

Plus, we don't have to pay for or deal with yearly inspections here...well worth it IMHO.

How does it work there? In Delaware we do it a little differently; you go through inspection at the DMV and then pay for your tags. Even though you have to sit in line (if you go at the wrong time), it's pretty convenient and easy. I'll take it an day over having to schedule and pay for an inspection at a garage.

Gas or diesel, doesn't matter. It's all based on the original MSRP of the car, unless the car was manufactured before the law was enacted (your '83 might be old enough).
My plates on the '87 300D were around $85/ea based on its MSRP of ~$42,000, the '95 is actually cheaper to insure than the '94 (not sure why), but without any claims or tickets I still pay pay pay. My Florida tags are $45, and the insurance is cheaper too.

I'm not sure when the law was enacted or how far back it goes....but all of our '83's and '82's have been under $40 to register, even back when we got mine in 2003.... Insurance between my SD and E are almost the same, I have comprehensive on my SD....and will probably add it soon to the E.....I think its like $460 a year for the SD and $530 for the E.....compared to all of the costs on ANY new car, I'm not complaining!

Aah, only liability insurance, that makes sense.
Yes the law based the taxes on weight through the end of the '70s, changed somewhere in the '80s to the current illegal method; a property tax that is not based on the value of the property, I was told by my Representative that they'd "look into changing it" about 6years ago, ... So you're saying you pay $145/year for a '90 300E and that makes sense? Remember that someone buying a new $40,000 Oldsmobuick pays the same amount as their new car is also valued at $40,000.

so...to summarize the gov't approach ...
take a potentially good running American vehicle that owners are buying replacement American parts for, destroy it, and let the owner go in debt (only to have ME bail him out later when he cant make house payments) and buy a new honda while US taxpayers pay for part of the sale. and dont forget the "environmental" benefits - taking a potentially running vehicle that gets 18mpg and replace it with a new vehicle that requires a tens of millions of BTU's (most of which came from a dirty coal plant) to actually manufacture, and replace it with a new vehicle that gets marginally better mpg. and if we could...lets involve the sleaziest people possible in any industry while we're at it (namely junkyards and car dealers in general) so they can spend countless hrs trying to fabricate paperwork to take junkers off their lot and trade them for $4500 of my g*ddamm money. Perfect! where do i sign this bill?
