1991 300D with an OM603
 

Located in Vancouver, BC. Way over priced. Looks like a Euro car as it has cloth seats and manual climate control. It also has the EGR delete from the factory and the updated fender with the air intake. Did Canada get the 300D '91 or is it a Euro model that someone imported?

I believe the 124.133 was available in the rest of the world through the end of W124 production in 1995, including Canada, eh. But it might have been an import to Canada. Might be able to tell more from the VIN. I like the dual zone climate control. It has a front-end facelift, probably had been in an accident at some point. I think it has factory EGR, unless that actuator is for the flapper valve - can't quite tell from the photo. I don't like the lack of airbag, and vinyl steering wheel.

BTW - pretty much all diesel models have the vented fender, worldwide, except for the USA-spec 1987 300D. Go figure! I never did understand why they did that.

It certainly has been played with, later hood/lights, deleted wipers, late / 8-hole wheels. Is it truly a 603 or a 602? I can't tell.

However, I don't believe that North America including Canada got the turn-signal repeaters behind the front wheels, that plus the lack of airbag and CHMSL again indicates non-NA. A close-up of the radio to see if it has AM-FM or MW-KW-UKW might help.

Would be an interesting car to have, although couldn't be imported to the US without a lot of changes.

Remember that non-US models have different standard equipment... the headlight wipers were likely optional. But yeah, I don't think 8-hole wheels appeared until 1992, on the 400E. I believe it's a 603 though, the 602 has a much deeper fan shroud.

Okay, definately European: The front plate holder maybe, because guys around here get Euro plates and holders for the front sometimes for show (MI doesn't require front plates), but notice the rear plate holder, and the two rows of numbers from the previous plate. Not sure the country, but not Canada.

The washer bottle has two pumps.

What are the odds it's French, ...

Look closely... the washer bottle only has one pump, on the front. The other pump would go on the inside, towards the engine, but there is no wire or hose going over there. The wire on the outside (towards the driver's fender) is the wiring harness feed to the pumps.

Damn, thought that was the other pump. Does this mean you win? Can't be Germany then, the headlamp washers are required there IIRC.

French Euro would have clear corners too, assuming these were not part of the '94/'95 headlamp swap.

I do not understand why we rave about Euro model. What I see in the picture is that there is NO airbag. I would expect there will be Driver/Pass side airbags in 91. Am I missing something? It is overprice to me.

Can someone enlighten me why Euro model is better? Is it better, apart from the fact that it may come with 5-sp?

This thing looks like my car except for the FRONT end and wheels.

Used to be that the Euro had less safety equipment and less luxury equipment, which saved weight, also had less emissions control equipment which increased power output.

Both of these differences meant that the US models were typically slower and didn't handle as well. Also US ride height used to be higher to meet bumper height, again leading to worse handling in the US.

Time and technology has decreased this margin, and these days the emissions in Germany are often identical to the US models. Germany does get a larger mix of models typically, for example you can buy the car with steel wheels if you wish, cloth interior, 5-speed, and several diesel engines. The US models in '91 had automatic only, leather or vinyl/tex, and the 2.5L turbodiesel. It's all about where MBUSA wants the cars to compete/sell, their image, and limiting the available models to those that will sell in large volume.

Maybe it's me, but...Something doesn't look right about that steering wheel.

...And shifter combo.

The shifter handle, due to it's acute shape, and a distinctive sheen, does not seem to be that of vinyl. It looks like the leather knob.

The wheel, acknowledging the fact it is without an airbag, seems out of place. The fact that it is of such a large diameter, dirty, and the ring is made up of padded vinyl, such as that found on '89 MY and earlier.

Since the front end has obviously had parts replaced, I hazard a guess that this car got slammed at the front, single air bag deployed was repaired with used parts and 'updated'. The owner at the time decided not to invest in a new airbag, and used an older steering wheel off some junker W123, instead.

It could be the original wheel, and it's possible the car does not have SRS (airbag), since the 124 was available in Europe without it. We can't really say for sure unless someone contacts the seller and gets the VIN number so we can decode the option list.
