Help! Replacing window motor in 1980 300sd
 

Thanks to this forum I have been able to get under the door panel and take off the hardware holding the window motor in place but I can't figure out how to get it out of the door. Should I be detaching the motor from the rail? Anybody help?

Once the panel is off, remove the nuts on the motor, i believe they are 10mm, they attach the regulator to the motor, if you want the whole thing to come out you will need to remove it from the tracks then wiggle it out of the hole, otherwise you can just remove the motor by itself, in good light its pretty self explanatory if you just look.

I did the following on a 123, lower the window until you can access the three bolts that hold the window to the regulator then unbolt the regulator, work it out of the access hole, then you can swap out the motor. Be sure to have the scissors of the regulator all the way down when you bolt the new motor in.

Thanks for the feedback, I really appreciate it. I have gotten it all done except I can't get the motor out from inside the door. There is a large plastic cup attached to the metal part that is trapped behind the channel/rail the window goes up and down in. It doesn't appear that the rail is movable.

Any ideas?

I am trying to do the same thing on an 81 300SD. What do you do if the window is up and the motor is dead? I have replaced the switch. When I press the button nothing happens not even a sound. Also I checked the voltage at the motor. When the switch is engaged it has about 13 volts.

i had the same problem. my window was up and the motor was dead. i took all the 10mm bolts and nuts off (7 i think) for the window track.
once you get it loose you should be able to wiggle the whole frame down and take the bolt out that hold the window. the front side i believe just slides off the track.

then you should be able to get in there and take the motor off.

My motor died with my window down, I pulled it off, (2 torx bolts only) and I had a replacement handy so I tried to install it. But I couldn't get it all the way in as it's on a threaded shaft (worm gear?), the last 1/2 inch wouldn't engage. So I had my boy power the new motor hoping this would cause it to engage as the thread turned. This wound my window up some but also fried my replacement. So now I am prowling for another motor and want to do it right this time. Thanks! :mad:

Is this to minimize the stress when firing up the new motor? I just replaced a motor today with the window up and it wasn't engaging the regulator for some reason. I could hear it trying at first, then no noise at all. I sure hope I didn't fry my new motor. I guess I'll have to pull it and test. :(

If it is like the 83 then this picture shows the motor attached to the gear head. There are 2 screws that attache the motor and if you take them out then you can rotate the entire motor to unscrew the worm drive from the gear head. If you want to remove both parts then there are 3 bolts that thread through from the back that you can remove so you can take the motor and gear head out together. If you do the second method use a mirror to see where the bolts are.

No, the regulator, with the motor installed, would not bolt in. It took a fresh set of eyes to figure out the mounting bolts would line up if the scissors were down completely.

I removed the motor and reinstalled once it was down.

A quick removal and test shows my "new" motor is functioning. I managed to lose the little plastic housing that receives the electrical leads from the motor. Another part to find. I tried to get around this by joining the leads with some twisted wire, I guess this may well have been why it wasn't working.
When I do the re-install I guess I will lower the regulator first and then ensure the tracks are well lubed.
