We bought a 40,000lb diesel motorcoach from a widow, the jacks collapsed while he was under it, ... trapped and couldn't inhale.

Was he using a set of 3-ton Harbor freight stands or something??

Plenty of capacity, rolled forward off of the jacks.

Probably not. Many people don't, I dropped my first Mercedes onto a brake rotor using the standard jack and parking brake, ... and I do such things fairly frequently / should know better (I still believe that these post-style M-B jacks are among the worst design in the industry).

The coach had 4 built-in hydraulic jacks that swing rearward when retracted, and the parking brake is on the drive axle only. I've had one fall off also (but not while under it, I keep chocks and 20-ton jack-stands for that). They're made for leveling the coach, not for lifting it to work beneath (although they will lift it off-the-ground so people do it).

I see it as on unwanted opportunity to kiss his posterior goodby if the truck falls.

I am constantly surprised by the amount of people who will work on a car supported by a jack only.

I am down the street from me died a few years back in this manner. The truck he was working under fell on him. Accidents like this probably happen more often than we think.

So in some ways, pits are safer than jacks, jackstands and lifts. Anybody have a pit in their garage?

My wife claims my garage is a "pit"-does that count?

I usually try to work under my 'Bird without jacks and with the air bags down. It can be tight but I've got a lot accomplished that way.
My neighbor in the RV storage lot had his trailer up on concrete blocks and at least 3 of them cracked and crumbled into pieces.

Never thought about that. I usually leave the jack underneath. And always leave the car in neutral.
