Can you describe the failure mode after 10K? Can you determine if it was related to the outer race in any way? On the side of the road, you might have simply put a preload into the rollers..........a guarantee of an early failure, independent of outer race.

I'd like to see some evidence of whether the "shortcut" has any detrimental long term effects, at the theory promulgates.

For all of you here bashing china made parts, here is the question for you:

Why dont you just buy your parts from the Mercedes Benz dealer? All there parts come with a 1 year warranty, and they even replace the part for you (labor wise) if it fails during that time.

Its funny, because people will constantly bash "cheap parts", because its not up to snuff to the MERCEDES grade, but your pay 1/3 or 1/2 of the price of the genuine price.

Stop being so cheap and buy the real deal. If you spend 1/3 of the price, you are going to get inferior parts. PERIOD!

Its funny cause people go to Harbor Freight and buy tools, but then later on complains because its not up to Snap On or MAC quality. No *****, you only paid 1/5th of what Snap On would have wanted for the same tool!

Here is another thing I see on this forum from time to time:

"I saw a 82 300D on craigslist for $500 and drove 2 hours to see it. I was dissapointed because it had rust, dirty engine, worn interior and I wasted my time and gas driving 2 hours to see it."

No *****? What did you expect for $500? A concours show car? LOL...

Im not harping on anybody particular here, im just saying, we have to be realistic and you get what you pay for.

On the upper control arms, at least they are easy to change out, but yeah, I know a couple people that bought the aftermarket stuff from performance products and after 18 months, it starting making the popping noise again around corners.

I spoke with a local ball bearing distributor not long ago and I learned that there is hardly any bearing that is made in the US anymore. Thats not to say that the quality is bad because they require that their standards be maintained wherever they are made.

Yes, you could tell by looking that the race was no longer smooth. It looked to me like the mode of failure was overheating due to grease meltage, which allowed the bearing to go dry. I may have preloaded them, don't know for sure. With limited tools, on the side of the road I'm more interested in quick, than correct.

I agree that if your race shows no signs of wear that it may be ok to re-use it. In my experience replacing both at the same time gets the longest life. My Brother in Law who is a certified mechanic replaced the bearing on the rear axle of my Plymouth Acclaim at 130k miles, and they were still good at 250k when I quit driving it. He was a firm believer in replacing the race at the same time. He maintains Fire Engines for a mjor SW city, so I trust his judgment.

I am not a mechanic and don't pretend to be. I didn't even sleep at a Holliday Inn Express last night.

DON'T BUY

I work there. The parts are left out in the yard to go bad. They buy from the Chinese at 1/10 of what they charge. If you ever saw the warehouse or the parking lot you would die. The owner laughs at stupid americans and Europeans for buying his crap and he knows it.

The real names of the company are Eurostar and Euorasiana, located in Norwalk CT and an empty office in Port Chester, NY. The stuff is crap and that Indian is laughing all the way to the bank and sending the money to Dubai.

You would not believe the crap they send out to EBAY customers. Most are defective returns.

I ordered a bunch of parts from P**formance P**ducts and have been shipped mostly crappy products from Hamburg-Technic (sorry, sponsors, this was before I joined the list...)

The latest bad part appears to be the front bearings. Since I couldn't torque down the clamping nut enough to restrict rotor movement, I disassembled the wheel assembly and measured it compared the new bearing to the old one. The old one is a Koyo, made in Japan and has an overall height of 18.6 mm. The new one from Hamburg-Technic has an overall height of 19.4 mm and has an overall "less-finished" appearance.

Other parts I have had to return:

Guide rod mount kit - Hamburg-Technic, no point of origin - rubber bushings were mis-cut, bolts were two different sizes and did not fit into either my old M-B original guide rods, nor the new (but curiously also defective) Febi-Bilstein made in India guide rods, the self-locking nuts were also different sizes.

Guide rods - Febi-Bilstein, made in India - bolt holes were too small for either the "new" Hamburg-Technic bolts or the old M-B original bolts. And yes, there's a note in the service manual about version 1 guide rods using an M10 bolt and later versions using an M12 bolt, so it is possible that it's correctly manufactured to the incorrect specification.

Don't take my word for it, look at the pictures.

Yep...pretty much validates my worst suspicions all along (or worse), if the stories posted above are true. The owner of the company will get his comeuppance, someday. Hopefully in the form of a lawsuit that takes him to the cleaners.
